What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title formatPost title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.
URL formatPost URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.
[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.
Country prefixCountry prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn't clearly mention the country.

Philadelphia (AFP) – Pop star Ed Sheeran said Saturday the situation in Gaza is "unjustifiable," following a wave of criticism that he had failed to back his opening act who was booted from the tour after making pro-Palestinian comments.

The singer, who had previously maintained an apolitical stance, broke his silence on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his first show since the controversy involving US rapper Macklemore.

"What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate," Sheeran said in Philadelphia.

"Our hearts have been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians' lives, children's lives, and the systemic injustice we're seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked."

Macklemore had declared "Free Palestine" at a New Jersey concert this month, drawing backlash from owners of US stadiums hosting future dates of Sheeran's Loop Tour.

The British artist, 35, has denied being behind the decision to remove the rapper, instead blaming the tour promoter.

Four supporting acts subsequently walked out on the "Shape of You" singer, issuing public statements citing their support for Palestinians.

"I've had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I'm so so sorry," an emotional Sheeran told his audience, who responded with cheers.

As the show was coming to an end, Sheeran said that this week had been the "hardest of my life" and that he had been afraid people would "throw things" at him.

Thanking the audience for their support, he called this show the "best night" of his life and shed some tears.

Sheeran had been accused by critics of failing to stand up to the stadium owners -- led by billionaire businessman Robert Kraft -- and was targeted by boycott calls.

The singer said he was "deeply worried" about the idea of venues pre-approving the content of performances.

"This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world."

"This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world."

Then he should reinstate Macklemore and refuse to perform anywhere that takes issue with that decision.

Bit late to make a statement isn't it

He made another statement earlier this week on social media, which didn't go as well. I think today was the first concert since the controversy began, so that could explain the timing / audience of this one.

Now it comes down to what he does differently moving forward

ed sheeran makes the situation about himself and calls gaza a "situation", still not taking sides. macklemore calls it what it is and points the focus back at the genocide.

It is never too late to do the right thing.

Not when there are victims involved. The dead don't reanimate because someone evolved their position.

Even if you killed people, its never too late to surrender, tell the truth, pay for your crimes, dare I say ask for forgiveness?

In other words give peace to the survivors and their families. We know it won't bring them back but it is the right thing.

But he hasn't done anything close to the right thing. That would involve doing something that would piss off Bob Kraft, and restore his supporting acts

this article is incorrect. "The singer, who had previously maintained an apolitical stance," wrong, he worked with Ukrainian nazi sympathizers.
