But you have heard of me...? 🫠

[–] gedfromgont@piefed.ca 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Lawyers of media companies certainly have.

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

But it's for LLM training, I promise.

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

Is that so? Well, they've got nothing on me, since I have a jar of dirt! Eat that, sleazy lawyers!

Friend: gets DMCA notice

ah, but you have heard of me!

I've seen a vlc site without adblocker on windows yesterday, it was experience

[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Whats a vlc site? vlc as in the media player?

[–] esc@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Couldn't replicate it in mobile by turning off ublock on fennec, probably because of the cache. But I am assuming it's just as obnoxious as lot of news and pirate sites.

I was lost for a few seconds before download started automatically. There were 20 download buttons, popups, everything.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 week ago

Ah, so you've heard of me?

[–] testaccount789@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yesterday I've 15 minutes trying to download ISO from https://www.haiku-os.org/

I simply didn't see that big, bright, and very obvious "Download it now!" button.

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Poorly designed button. Wrong colour and too much information. Green and "Download Here" would have been better.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this is 90% of what being a professional marketer is.

[–] Blurntout@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Me constantly fucking myself out of sales by trying to offer customers informed options lol

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

There is a link to the download mirrors inside the installation guides.

[–] lath@piefed.social 11 points 1 week ago

That's the secret handshake to get to the real dark web goods...

[–] waz@feddit.uk 7 points 1 week ago

With jackett installed, I haven’t seen a button to download anything in ages

[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You guys use the internet to download torrents?

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I personally get my torrent files delivered via postal mail.

[–] dermanus@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's on an SD card attached to a pigeon for me.

Hawks can seriously mess with my download speed.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Package loss and whatnot

[–] lath@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Mine come with the floods, like in the olden days.

[–] HouseWolf@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I get them on DVD from a guy selling them out of his car by the pub.

[–] violetanka@lemmus.org 6 points 1 week ago

Your friend must have tried piracy like 15 years ago.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

We shan't discuss the reliable methods

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just show them how to use searching on qbittorrent lol

[–] HuePony@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wait, there is a search? But isn't it would be like full of viruses? Its better to use good torrent site and even it sometimes can have viruses

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

But isn't it would be like full of viruses?

Not any more than the websites the search plugins use. Its basically searching the same way you do, on the sites you specify.

The search lists are community compiled and maintained and use dozens of those sites. Of course don't completely trust it... but it works really really well...

Qbittorrent search plugins

The biggest benefit is you can search everything so you don't have to trawl multiple sites. You can also add private trackers to it as well.

Anyone using torrents is a bad pirate 😂

Edit: after Kazaa etc torrents became big, but the true way to pirate is usenet.

Insane amount of malware and viruses, plus you're constantly uploading which is what cops are looking for. Usenet is the way to go. With Sonarr en Radarr for automation for downloading movies and series. Paying for usenet means paying for privacy. No uploading, infinite availability, even of rare to find stuff. There are many communities. Sure, usenet is best if you pay for it, but often you get free VPN with it. So basically you get usenet and VPN for the same price as what you would pay for VPN alone.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

I see, thanks I'll look into that

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Which indexers are you subscribed to? Using Geek and Ninja currently and have not run into many issues outside music availability being quite sparse

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most is found through drunkenslug, the other 2 I can't remember the name of and I can't look as I'm on holiday.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've managed to get an account there recently but found that 3 might be overkill for my purposes. Enjoy your holiday!

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

One is with mostly stuff from my country, the 3rd one is redundancy in case drunkenslug is offline

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

Usenet. It's the way to go. Trust me. Torrents are shit.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Good pirate = Gets the stuff with minimum effort and acceptable risk

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Exactly, that's why torrents suck.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How so? Torrenting is super easy

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you don't want junk, you need to be in closed communities. For those you need to upload a minimum ratio or get banned. Or buy premium or upload credit. But closed communities don't have everything, so you're limited, and need to have several communities to find what you need. But in some places you will be fined when downloading anything, like in Germany. So you also need a VPN, one that does not log. Then you need a proper download application, one without ads and which doesn't use your machine for crypto mining in secret in the background. Or you can fill up your drives with malware, viruses and other junk, wrong files, etc. by using open websites. While still being tracked, having to upload data, being vulnerable.

Sure, torrents are super easy, so was limewire. But it's not a good and safe way to pirate. It's like buying street food in Africa: it's super easy but the chance of not getting food poisoning is rather slim.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I find pretty much everything in good quality from public trackers. However Usenet is probably better, I might test it in the future. Since people are giving it very high praise. I am just too lazy to do it, and the current system works fine for me.
