I think I doom scroll a lot less since I switched Reddit to the fediverse. There is a lot less OC going around over here. However there is a lot more actual news, which are usually bad.

I'm trying to post more, at least one art thing per day. It's definitely quieter without the pugjesus firehose going nonstop
I just block all news on here and read the newspaper daily. It's made the news a lot more boring and normal.
The important part is that news should eventually run out. Reddit and modern news sites are designed so that you can never "finish", which is an attempt to hook you to keep reading. Doomscrolling is a deliberately designed addiction feature
I remember reading a study which came to the conclusion that people who regularly watch or follow the news have a less accurate picture of what's happening in the world. Worse even than people who don't follow the news at all. You're much better off reading long form journalism or books. This was before fox news became a big thing and when the internet was still in its infancy.
Not surprising, a lot of news is man bites dog, extra-ordinary stuff, ie. how the world usually doesn't work. That and all the agenda setting, framing, propaganda, etc. Doubt social media and short form videos have helped much either.
For example, IRC people who watch/read a lot of news, were more likely to overestimate crime statistics and think the world was much worse than it actually is.
You sure you're not thinking of the studies showing that fox viewers knew less than consumers of other media?

No, as mentioned in my comment, this was before fox news became a big thing.
Yes. I am old.
Now with ADHD!
this is the kinda person that also posts on reddit or lemmy about how never leaving their home for any reason makes them a better person than all of those "extroverts" with no self-awareness at all.
As an introvert I'm the first to admit I'm the problem. Humans are supposed to be social.
