Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the UN all in favor of slavery over execution. Am I the only one who thinks that's worse?
I think it's better because if new evidence surfaces and proves innocence, the prisoner could be freed. You can't unexecute someone.
While I'd do agree, there is other things you can't undo. Both the person themselves and the external factors would be against the impacted person.
The person will be left with lifelong trauma, PTSD and sorts of other illnesses including physical illnesses; in addition to that, sustaining life would be a challenge.
In terms of external factors, the society will always look down on that person; in addition, finding jobs would be nearly impossible making financial sustainment difficult and enabling homelessness.
I'm not making it appear as one option is better than the other, but puting into realisation that the system is constructed to break people no matter if the person is inoccent or not. The issue is the system.
Personally speaking I’d rather live with a chance of proving my innocence than die. I suspect most people would feel the same.
While I'd agree it is slavery. There are definitely some people I think deserve to have their rights entirely restricted forever and contribute to society with the understanding they will never benefit from it themselves which sure you can call slavery but I think most would refer to it as a form of punishment and service.
If criminals, even just those who are proven guilty of the worst crimes without doubt, are forced to provide free labor, society directly benefits from their crimes and is incentivised not to prevent them.
I think that's a perverted way to view it.
As of right now private companies benefit from imprisoning people so they lobby to keep certain laws and retain an abundance of prisoners from petty crimes. On top of more private industries benefitting from selling military grade tech to police forces.
People being forced to provide free labor as an alternative to the death penalty is the lesser problem in the face of that.
I'm warming up to the death penalty. Not for any specific crime necessarily, but some individuals are just beyond repair or rehabilitation.
Does the state have the right to kill?
While I do agree that some are beyond repair or rehabilitation, I disagree that the death penalty is the best way to deal with them. Even if proven to have done a crime worthy (such as with DNA), I firmly believe that it's the easy way out for a lot of offenders. Life in prison without the chance of rehab is a much worse punishment in my eyes. Additionally, in many countries, the death penalty is more expensive than just keeping someone in prison for life. The modern & "humane" ways to execute people are very expensive.
I'm talking more about serial killers, serial rapists, repeat violent offenders etc. who do not respond to rehabilitation after ample opportunities. Death penalty cannot be more expensive than incarcerating people for decades. All that you need for capital punishment is a tough piece of rope and gravity. But if you want to use more humane methods, voluntary euthanasia costs in Switzerland are about $13k, which is far less than housing someone in a maximum security prison for even one year.
I don't trust the justice system and I don't trust the media not to railroad someone for ratings.
