A nearby school has just finished construction and is planning to open next week. However, it's already been struck multiple times by bullets escaping a shooting range a mile or so away. They've released notices telling people to avoid one side of the building due to the stray bullets and adjusted activities to the late evening when the range is closed.

After asking the range to improve it's quality so that this doesn't happen, the shooting range apparently told them to pound sand. Now there's a big lawsuit trying to force this shooting range to actually stop the bullets being fired so they don't kill children because they refuse to do anything.

Shooting range just leaks bullets and is allowed to continue to exist? What?

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago

Seriously, what the fuck.

The entire god damn point of a shooting range is to be a safe place to shoot a weapon.

It's failing at it's one job.

There's an injunction now to keep them from using firearms capable of reaching the school.

That's pretty fucked up. I've been to a shooting range in my state and it I think they designed it so it's impossible for bullets to escape. I mean, maybe if you wanted to shoot through the roof you could manage it.

Outdoor range. Berm stop. Sounds like they just need to raise the berm height and kick morons off the range who shoot too high.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago

More put an upper stop on outdoor ranges as well stop high shots don't matter. The Swiss have a range that's designed so safe they're approved to shoot across and above an active highway.

If it were a noise complaint I'm with the range because they existed before the school. That said if it's hitting the school it means your range is profoundly unsafe that shit wouldn't fly at a residential range let alone a commercial one and at that point I'm with the school even if it was dumb to choose a spot across from a gunrange.

Kinda hard to prove if someone shoots high unless they do it constantly. I think the better option is the range paying for a physical barrier, essentially creating a berm in between the school and the range but much much closer to the school.

Nah, fuck that, the bullets need to come to a full stop inside the shooting range. You wanna run a business on giving people a place to shoot? It's your responsibility to make sure nobody outside the range is getting shot.

No, they need to stop the rounds within their boundary. Who else is in danger because of this, it won't be just the school.

Having stray rounds frequently leaving their premises is totally unacceptable, and they need to cease operating until the problem is solved.

You got a link to a story or something?

I first thought this was an onion article.

Most American school ever

Article instead of an anecdote?

[–] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 12 points 6 days ago

Can you not simply shoot into the shooting range to stop all the shooting out?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

While nothing is too crazy to be true these days, this sounds wild even for God's Own Country™.

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago

That’s just an US school being christened.

The new school doesn't show up on Google maps yet, but here is the distance between the range and school site.

I don't understand how this wasn't a problem before the school... That shooting range is just pointing at an apparent neighborhood with a small berm at the end of the lanes and then, just pasture?

Oh, well, this is Texas, they probably think catching a few strays will toughen them up. The Texas government hates its own people almost as much as they hate people from everywhere else.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago

I think the houses are far enough off the direction of fire that they haven't been hit, whereas the school is in the line of fire.

Or they've just been lucky?

[–] Zulu@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Damn yeah thats just directly north downrange lol

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago

Oh wow, the range directly faces the school.

Yeah, that's terrifying.

Theyre tenderizing the meat before they go for the full course.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

Ok but who built a school in front of a fucking range? I feel like the range takes the least amount of blame here.
