ELIA: Explain like I'm American

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

that cyrillic is probably spelt like cat.

НЯ is pronounced nya which apparently can mean "cute" in Russian. Guess that might be the joke?

Cat is Кошка in Russian / кіт in Ukrainian

[–] Godnroc@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nya is an onomatopoeia for the sound a cat makes. Typically associated with pop culture representations of felines, catgirls/boys, and other cat-like beings.

If 'R' is pronounced 'arr' then is 'Я' pronounced "rra'?

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Ya". And the Cyrillic "H" is an N. So, ня = nya.

I like mine better and as an American I will be taking no further questions at this time.
