I remember, like 15 years ago, you used to have to install a whole bunch of different extensions to filter them all out. Now it’s one extension, and it pretty much comes perfectly configured right out of the box. You don’t even need to fiddle with it.
And I think it’s a same extension for every browser
I’ve practically forgotten that ads exist to the point that, on the very, very rare occasion, I ever encounter one, I react like a vampire encountering sunlight
Anything chromium (well manafest V3) needs uBlock Origin lite, otherwise it is just UBO
Those are all just WebKit-based browsers, which is Safari, too. UBlock Origin Lite works just as well though.
Edge is Chromium, not Webkit
Yes, interesting. I see that it got forked a few years back into something called Blink. I didn’t realize that.
What got forked? Edge started out as a rebranded IE. It was using Trident iirc at its core engine. Then moved to EdgeHTML then chromium. I think they're rebranded/reinvented since the old versions were discontinued.
I was referring to chromium forking from WebKit
15 years ago when I aww my first ad, I got Adblock Plus and that was it. Then I eventually moved to uBlock Origin, as you do. ABP was there from day one with YouTube ads. I was there. I seent it.
Adblock plus was pretty good, but it could leak from time to time with YouTube ads. Sometimes needed a little extra to make sure you got everything on YouTube.

I generally couldn’t watch YouTube on my phone or tablet if I wanted to. With vpn and Adblock, it would ask me to login.
I just use freetube on pc.

Ok serious question. On my phone I use Firefox with ublock and don't get any ads. But on PC I use the same and it doesn't stop the ads. wtf?
Edit: solved - I didn't have uBlock Origin set to run in private browsing, which my browser is permanently set at
you can also use ublock origin to block the login popup for facebook.

FF with Ublock should block Youtube out of the box. Have you messed with the block-lists or other configuration?

yt-dlp helps, but really people need to stop using YouTube and all other Google services
I'd love to. Are there (actual) alternates? I'm not talking about YouTube players or downloaders.
Peertube is great, I sometimes archive youtube videos I find to be important on it, like this one that was age-gated to require login.

I haven't heard much about them, but there are services like peertube, odysee, and kick. Personally I think popularizing grayjay is the first step towards dethroning YouTube since everything stays in one app it's easier to follow anyone that switches.
Just use an adblock
Use a browser that doesn't suck and install uBlock Origin. Ads are for bads.
On android YouTube morphe is GOAT.
I support any company that gives me an option for ad free service at a reasonable price. I love premium because i use YouTube music on my cars infotainment and it's great. My kids already get ad free YouTube on their phones and computers because i get 5 keys to hand out.

Yup, I don't have time to mess around with blockers, and I enjoy supporting the platform that hosts the people I listen to.... Not sure why anyone wants to make life harder
No shame in paying for the things you use, even if you are funding Google. But when you say messing around with blockers. Are you talking about installing a single extension?
I assume you use that extension anyway because its the only way the internet is even remotely usable
Could be referring to setting up a pi-hole? That's a more involded process and I believe would be necessary if you mainly use YouTube TV.
I really wouldn't shame anyone for buying premium, because even if Google is the antichrist, YT is probably the website whose services I use more than any other. On the other hand though, there's really nothing hard about adblocking. It's maybe a single 30 second block out of one day and carries over anywhere you go online.
I think it's much more effective to support them by giving 5 dollars to their Patreon or buy an item of their merch. (assuming they have either) from what I've heard, ad revenue is next to nothing.
