Lower Decks is one of my favorite series, right up there with DS9. You can tell it was made with such love for Star Trek.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Even the live action episode in SNW works great with the voice actors.

[–] valar@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is me but it's TNG both times

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Which is good, but Lower Decks is totally worth it. It feels more like trek than anything else produced since TNG,

Lower Decks has a hopeful optimism that never loses it's core message. The universe is a scary place, and the Federation has problems, but if we work together and support each other, we can make the world a better place. Cerritos Strong.

the Orville is the best TNG we got since TNG

[–] lemjukes@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 month ago (4 children)

how dare you besmirch the name of DS9 like that

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

DS9 is kinda it's own thing

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

DS9 was good, I should rewatch it, but it has a different vibe than TNG, The Orville is closer to TNG than DS9.

not a bad thing.

[–] lemjukes@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

youre totally right i read best TNG since TNG but heard "best star trek since TNG" and those are absolutely different things/vibes.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

no problem.

the steaks couldn't be lower unless Sam Rutherford and Tendy find a Jeffery tube under his bunk

[–] lemjukes@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 month ago

mmmmh steak

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think calling DS9 TNG would be more besmirching.

[–] lemjukes@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

youre right, i misinterpreted what op said.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 month ago

How dare you think TNG is on the same level as DS9

[–] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn't really like the Orville. Or rather, I wanted to like it, but found myself getting bored with it extremely fast. Every single episode is a new social commentary, without exception.

Obviously, Star Trek has a TONNE of social commentary, so that itself is not the problem. The problem I had, is that Star Trek also has sci-fi mysteries, silly episodes, philosophical questions, etc. I found Orville was just social commentary after social commentary without any of the additional flavours.

My all time favourite episode is Measure of a Man, which of course is a social commentary, but it's more of a philosophical question of what we consider sentients and "life" to be. Even with Zero, I think his name was? I didn't get those same vibes.

Jump straight to the second season, the first episodes are too comical, later he gets a better balance of TNG and Seth's humour.

Also, it is unfair to compare measure of a man with anything. one of the best episodes in TV history.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Nah, jump straight to ep4

If the stars should appear, pria, krill goddamn that show grew a beard faster than Frakes.

[–] Fawkes@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

I did actually watch the first and second season, and just never really enjoyed it.

And fair, I wasn't trying to compare them directly, more pointing out that Star Trek has many episodes that have little to nothing to do with social commentary. And it seemed like that was the ONLY concept being explored in Orville, with sci-fi as a backdrop for funsies.

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 16 points 1 month ago

That trumpet fanfare on the TNG theme was a banger, no doubt about it.

Redshirts by John Scalzi.

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I just got this book! I have not read it yet but love some of his other books.

[–] dkppunk@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

I read this a while back. It’s good, funny, and carries the spirit of a Lower Decks episode. Scalzi rocks

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Oh sweet, a John Scalzi book I haven't read. Yet.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

I didn’t pay attention to how the Lower Decks logo is inspired by the TNG logo.

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago (5 children)

i tried lower decks more than once, and really wanted to like it, but just couldn't develop any giveashit about what happens next. does it get any better? or does it stay similar to the first few episodes?

[–] lunchbox2287@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There's a lot of character building with the shenanigans. I'd recommend trying to push farther, but if you're not feeling it, you're not feeling it. No shame in that.

[–] Z745812939054@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

thanks i'll give it another shot. i am weird in that i'll DNF something and then give it another try later on and end up loving it. mostly books and video games, but we'll see about shows

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

They hit their stride and figure out what they’re doing on the Buffer Time episode.

LD S1E03 Temporal Edict

Show is fantastic and chock full of references for Star Trek fans. Also adds to a lot of plot lines and race backgrounds.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

It gets less Rick and Morty-ish as time goes on.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 3 points 1 month ago

Nope. I bailed out too.

[–] the_artic_one@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn't like most of season 1 but it started to get better near the end, S2 onward was great.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Would if really be Star Trek if the first season wasn't weaker than the rest?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

What was with those rugs? My grandparents had one. Also, bravo to the animators.

[–] SnerkRabbledauber@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

For me young Homer = Star Trek Homer = Next Generation Grandpa Simpson = Lower Decks

[–] thezeesystem@lemmy.blahaj.zone -4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Me with Star Trek academy. It's on par with star trek tng.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Recommend show for a first timer? I'm thinking of starting with TNG. I always changed the channel when I was a kid but as an adult I am much more interested now that I understand the politics of the lore.

(Okay so technically I'm not completely new to the concept. I've seen The Orville. That, along with the 2009 film but I understand why people aren't a fan of that one so I suppose it doesn't count.)
