I just want a map app that understands the dedicated bicycle lanes in my country and does not recommend insane unsafe routes because it assumes I'm in a car. I have tried comaps and organic maps but I always need to like try out the routes myself first to find a good route.

It's actually quite a hard problem for OSM community to solve since you need quite detailed data (stuff like road surface, width etc) and possibly traffic data. Even then, that doesn't tell you everything like whether it's a "nice place" to cycle or is dangerous. There are people trying to work on it but it is a hard problem. One can hope it gets solved.

Do those apps not have separate car/bicycle modes? Osmand does

If they do and the paths are still wrong you might need to tag them correctly on OpenStreetMap.

They do, but the routes are rarely optimal for cyclists. Or sometimes technically legal to ride on, but if you know the place in real life you know some of the roads are less than ideal for cyclists.

Itโ€™s definitely better than Google Maps, which tells me to cross a roundabout on foot โ€“ even though thereโ€™s actually a path just for pedestrians a little further on (I think? Iโ€™m not even sure if itโ€™s officially recognised by the city lmao)

Edit:

The blue route is the google maps suggestion, the green one is the safest one that everyone takes, The roundabout is also part of a ring road .-.

CoMaps is an interesting project, but I've gotten so used to Organic Maps ๐Ÿ˜ are there any other features it has that could make it stand out from Organic Maps? (Besides the map colours)

And most importantly: does it feature public transit navigation options beside the metro?

[โ€“] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Comaps looks and works like Organic, since its a Fork

Public transit is bad on both, I'd recommend รถffi

I tried รถffi. Nothing works in my country besides regular passenger trains, which I don't take that often. If neither OM and Co work with public transit, then I would rather recommend any app that pulls its information from Transitous. I tried it with Trรคwelling just for the fun of the game, but it did work really great

In my experience , in Berlin it works for the U Bahn (metro) and S Bahn (train) but not for buses and trams :โ€™)

[โ€“] petrescatraian@libranet.de 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, I have a similar experience with Organic Maps. We don't have anything like the S Bahn yet in Bucharest, but we have a metro and it works with it. However the vast majority of my trips are made with the surface transit (buses, trams and trolleybuses) and that's where Organic Maps doesn't help.

Looks like they're working on an integration with the GTFS feeds, albeit I would've been happier if they used an already established project like @transitous instead

Transitous first release is only 2 years ago. It is possible they donโ€™t know about this project, it might be well received to open an issue in co maps suggesting the integration of transitous

Can comaps do directions? I can't figure out how if so.

[โ€“] Luffy879@lemmy.ml 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You click on a place and select Route to on the bottom.

[โ€“] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Thanks, friend!

[โ€“] kalapala@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I didn't find that feature either.

[โ€“] drmoodmood@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Tap once on the map or search up where you want to go and tap on "Route To."

[โ€“] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Thanks buddy!

[โ€“] kalapala@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Didn't get directions as a list. Just route on map.

[โ€“] drmoodmood@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago

Oh, that's what you were looking for. Sorry, don't think comaps does that.

[โ€“] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

lol, someone is down voting us because the UI is unclear. Some people.

[โ€“] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Well that's weird, now there's no down vote. I guess they regretted it. ๐Ÿ˜„

Use the route to button in the bottom right

I haven't had luck with it when it comes to finding places in Finland. And all of the open source options seem to have issues with residential areas, not just Comaps. That's not counting the technical issues.

HereWeGo, while closed source and a private company unfortunately, is at least European and even has public transportation data. At least it's not Google too.

I still use Every Door when possible to contribute, but the lack of residencies and glacial update cycles still leaves it so that I can't really recommend these apps to even my wife, let alone others.
