This only really works with respect to the GNU Project, as the animal is generally pronounced with a silent "g".

Is that really how it's pronounced? I sorta thought it was a silent G but have only read the word

Yes, that is how it is pronounced (in terms of GNU, unsure about the animal). Same with GNOME.
