I find it hard to believe that it's somehow cheaper for them to mass produce two different models of Switch 2 for different regions than to just bite the bullet and make battery replacements easier for everyone.

I mean, even Apple chose to give up the lightning port across all their phones after the EU required it, and they had a much bigger incentive to not change in other regions since they made a good deal of money via lightning adapter licensing/certification.

Hopefully this will eventually trickle over to international models, unless Nintendo decides to burn even more consumer good will than they already have.

If youโ€™re in the USโ€ฆ wait till you find out what a tariff is. Youโ€™ll get a letter saying the switch you paid $450 for can be picked up for an additional $300 bucks. TACO Tax.

Your choice is to pay $750 for a Switch2 OR abandon your $450 and your order will be destroyed.

The problem with that is, while it's nice to have a replaceable battery, the fact that it comes with a Switch 2 attached makes it much less appealing.

They already have the molds and machines that they paid for to make the current version. Apple only gave up the lightning port with the release of a new model not mid cycle. Nintendo probably gonna switch over to the updated version internationally when the molds of the old model have been fully depreciated on the books.

This benefits companies too. A healthy population not poisoned by pollution is required to hire workers. Repairable devices save money for businesses as well.

Except many are blinded by "shareholder value". If they follow Apple's footsteps of unrepairable devices for a rabid fanbase, they can boast to shareholders, that they're selling more units. Did know an Apple fan like that, his solution for the lack of repairability was jUSt Don'T bE a GorILla, even remembered making a meme about that back in the days. He was a big pusher of hardware enshittification, wanting devices to be thinner and thinner, and bullied anyone owning "e-waste" phones and computers, and of course he made an infographic about why most people would be fine with wireless headphones.

I think you missed the point. It's not about the money, it's about a beneficial way to move forward that includes as many as possible. Money should always be secondary until we can wash our hands of it completely.

The first laptop I had had a battery you could easily detach and swap. If it was close to dying it told you to charge the computer or swap the battery

I had an Apple laptop with a removable battery (an iBook G4). It even had a button and LEDs on the battery to show the level of charge, like tool batteries have nowadays. And not only was the RAM upgradable, it could be done toollessly because the keyboard could be popped off just by undoing a couple of latches.

Ah the good old days, before the majority of America bought Apple tech and incentivised other manufacturers to follow the practice of walled gardens, intentional malware and monetised tech lifespans. Thanks to the EU regulators' constant defense against corporations, it's possible that charging for repairs within the first 10 years, either at a specialist centre or via manufacturer-specific tools, might just be put under 'hidden fees' or 'false advertisement'. With the help of the EU we retain some semblance of owning the product we purchased

There was a time when Apple hardware was extremely repairable and upgradeable. Then Jonny Ives ruined everything. His legacy is one of terrible pollution that will cause problems for generations to come.

Can't wait for a Switch 2 OLED and Switch 2 homebrew. Otherwise the console is utterly pointless and switching from a modded Switch OLED makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Homebrew is gonna take a few years at the very least, the new system seems to have some very tough security. An OLED screen is a must though, unless you mostly play it while docked I can't imagine going from the Switch OLED to the Switch 2 would be a worthwhile experience.

By the time I can afford Switch 2 it'll be obsolete. Etch-a-Sketch is still something I don't need a subscription for and it looks kind of techy in a tablet sort of way so Etch-a-Sketch it is then. I think I'm going to 'render' a Switch 2 on it.
