Dumping someone at a mountain trail isn't a "male ego" thing. That's just abusive and insane.

The article dives into more nuance. The hypothesis being that it could have something to do with instances where men feel more of a need to be able to "complete" the "objective" of the hike, or may go on hikes which are more demanding than their partner may be ready for, or also that they may be ready for.

Similarly, one of the experts in the article goes on to say that this they don't particularly like making it a gender thing, but unfortunately there is some stark correlation

Women commit more infanticides but we would talk about that as a collection of cases of mental breakdown or criminal intent, not as an essential female quality. Similarly, this supposed “trend” with vanishingly small numbers should be looked at as a collection of cases of gross neglect or criminal intent, not as an essential male quality.

Can you imagine if we looked at every pattern of bad behavior in women and blamed it on femininity? Oh, wait, we have and still do to some extent, it’s just now that’s rightly called out as “sexist as fuck.”

Still waiting for society to learn you can be sexist towards men too, sadly.

This doesn't happen to the women that pick the bear

WT actual Fuck… that’s Not divorce, it’s potential murder. What assholes.

[–] AMoralNihilist@feddit.uk 7 points 5 months ago

The term alpine divorce references a book about a murder/suicide/framing plot of a couple going in a mountain holiday. (Check

So the term implies that it is attempted murder.

OK ladies and gentlemen. Never leave the house with less than you expect you can survive the night.

It sucks that these dudes are assholes, just make sure your pack has enough water, a knife, fire, and some shelter. Please.

Well, all I'm going to say is that I've been on a few hikes with my ex and it wasn't me complaining the whole trip.

I understand the analysis of the phenomena but I cant help myself thinking it would be the same thing between male friends or brothers... in other words, this is less a sexist move than a wider asshole move from people with sociopathy issues. I don't say its not a concerning issue.... Actually it tells a lot about the society we are suffering right now

Good thing women dont have huge egos and always communicate clearly and say what they mean. Phew.

[–] howler@lemmy.world -2 points 5 months ago (2 children)

This is such a dumb article. A handful of women go on day hikes that sucked.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You didn't read the article. The Austrian guy refused help and refused to wrap the girl (who was very inexperienced) into an emergency blanket before he fucked off.

[–] howler@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

I did read the article, and that one example is terrible. But this isnt an epidemic. Its not a dumb article because of the severity of any of the cases. Its a dumb article because it paints a picture of lost and starving women on trails everywhere. Its a handful of assholes being assholes.
