I refuse to make fun of dietary restrictions after spending five years as a waiter rolling my eyes at gluten free people and then developing a gluten intolerance.

The universe is a tricky bitch. It gave me a literal pain in the ass.

You can be annoyed by gluten bad gluten free while recognizing the real pain of celiacs.

Just because it isn't a visible disease does not mean everyone is in the right.

I dislike the disregard for vegans in the post, still.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 23 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I once had a buddy with Celiac's, it was interesting trying to find a restaurant that worked for us both. The tide of hipsters wanting everything gluten free was a godsend!

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

FYI it's just Celiac disease, or they are a celiac, no 's

[–] three@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 months ago

FYI you should use punctuation, such as a period, at the end of a sentence to let your readers know the thought is complete.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

Nah I guarantee NOBODY is going through the gluten free diet unless they really believe there might be a chance they're allergic. And you have to go gluten free for a bit to see if you are.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

No you don't, not for celiac. It's symptoms are debilitating.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

I know a case like that. He was unfortunate enough to have doctors that were unable to diagnose him properly. When he started the diet in his thirties and his absolutely debilitating health condition got a lot better in so many ways, it was such a relief!

But also, there are people who are not celiacs but do have an intolerance, and the diet is worth trying if someone thinks it may be their case.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org -2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, but that's not the gluten allergy.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The guy I was talking about in the first paragraph was a celiac.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org -2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I was talking about the second.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

That was meant as another example of people for whom trying the diet can be relevant.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net -1 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It's possible to be delibitated and not know why. Until you stop eating gluten and get better. You should watch House MD, House is always using the treatment as the test. He tries something and sees if the patient gets better. Many of those patients are dying and he still doesn't know what they have until he tries a treatment.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

House is in no way a realistic medical show

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Are you saying doctors don't give patients treatments for unknown diseases to see if they'll work?

[–] CoolCat@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's obvious you've never had to go through this because generally no, that does not happen often.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Well My doctors say "take this and we'll see if it works" all the time.

[–] CoolCat@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

That's for known diseases. We were talking about unknown. And House is not realistic at all.

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Not the way House does!

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 1 points 6 months ago

I remember a medical friend rolling his eyes at the show when it was airing, because usually he could guess what the end diagnosis could be from the symptoms. House was just really good at making the drama about the doctor interject and extend the eyeball time into the hour long episode

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

It’s possible to be delibitated and not know why. Until you stop eating gluten and get better

^ This.

  • There's coeliac which is the most easily identifiable,
  • a generalised gluten allergy, which - last time i checked - needs you to stay off/stay on gluten consumption for a week leading up to a blood test
  • allergy to one specific grain like wheat, but not all gluten.
  • and there are people who just have really bad digestive issues but have found that going gluten free helps.

We should have more sympathy for people who have to grapple with this shitty, under-researched allergy.

I just don't get why people think they're allowed to be mad at someone for what they order. They would choose the yummy gluten snacks if they weren't struggling to eat something good for them.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

No you don't. They can do a blood test for it now.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 4 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Blood test has poor reliability, and you have to eat gluten to get it which makes many people too sick to even get tested

The gold standard is a biopsy of the duodenum but again you need to be eating like 20g of gluten a day for a few weeks and many people get too sick after even a few milligrams

Neither diagnoses NCGS, non Celiac gluten sensitivity. The only test is to stop eating gluten.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Eh, you haven’t worked in food service.

What always sent me was the people who ordered gravy after telling me they were gluten sensitive..

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 83 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Vegans can eat just about anywhere. Feel bad for the carnivore friend who just has to stay hungry until you see a roadkill animal.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 32 points 6 months ago (1 children)

This one time roadtripping, my vegan buddy stopped 4 separate times for a snack, while I didn't see so much as a squirrel pancake for 14 hours. Unfair!

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago

I got lucky and found a dead skunk I could chew on.

My loser vegan friend missed out!!!

[–] pewpew@feddit.it 4 points 6 months ago

Do you live in the Beastars universe?

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 29 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I immediately sent this to my boomer parents on WhatsApp after I found this and they think it is hilarious

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

Quick, simple, needs nobody to be Online to get it. A classic!

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 16 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If only it was that easy. More fruit trees in cities for instance.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"I'm sorry?! Do you want homeless vagabonds rummaging around MY neighborhood, snacking on the fruits of MY trees?! I THINK THE FUCK NOT! ONLY MALE TREES! ALLERGIES YES, VAGABONDS NO!!!"

-NIMBYs, with funding by big agro

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Gotta keep those lemon stealing whores away

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 1 points 6 months ago

.>

My planted lemon trees haven't sprouted any goods yet. I'm still waiting to have to, erm, chase off one of them thieves.

[–] OR3X@lemmy.world 15 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Has anyone stopped to consider how the grass might feel about this? I didn't think so.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

That's why I only eat prokaryotes.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Have you ever stopped to think about how prokaryotes feel about that arrangement? That's why I only eat silicates

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ain't no good prokaryote 'cept one that's enslaved or dead. Those freaky little bastards don't even have organelles or a nucleus. MRSA, Botulism, Anthrax...we've been at war for billions of years. Long will I have been in the cold, cold ground before I recognize prokaryote rights.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

Single cell cyanonacteria ftw though! They bow to no one, they're self sufficient, they don't enslave or eat others.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 10 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

This summer? Who the fuck is going to be able to afford gas for roadtripping?

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Uhhhhhh, fuck, can't you read???

Clearly we who can split it between roadkill and roadsalads!

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

At first I thought this was telling me to fuck my friend in the mouth....
