I love that the Dude later goes to this guy's performance (I'm not sure what it was) so he's cool with the rent being late. It's just a little mini-story that doesn't really need to be there, but adds to the world of the Dude.

I never thought the Dude attended the dance quintet so that he would get something out of it. I always figured he was just a cool guy who did things like that when he knew it would matter to someone else in his life.
That's how i took it too. Guy asked him to watch it, so the Dude abided.
