This really was a huge foretelling of what was to come with the American political climate.

The disproportionate freak-out that their comments elicited was puzzling and weird at the time. But now it seems like nothing.

The Dixie Chicks situation, the freedom fries fiasco, all the French wine purchased and then poured down a drain in anger, and the myriad of other little meltdowns during W's era look quaint today.

They felt that country was 'theirs', so when a major country group turned out to not hold expected opinions, that filled their black hearts with terror. Classic status threat, and yes, very analogous to the core motivations of Trumpism and movement conservatism

A few days later, Maines issued an apology, saying her remark had been disrespectful.

I would like to apologise...

She rescinded the apology in 2006, saying she felt Bush deserved no respect.

To absolutely nobody!
