Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

What does that have to do with anything? Terrorists hijacked a plane 14 years ago and now we’re here.

The terrorists today are domestic, running around in tacticool gear and working for our government.

United Flight 93 was the plane that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania on 9/11. It was headed for some important federal building in Washington DC, but was detoured to the ground directly below it because of the intrepid actions of the plane's passengers and flight crew. They sacrificed their lives to prevent a (potentially) greater tragedy.

I think the connection op is making is that collective action and bravery can, even in the 11th hour, prevent a larger disaster.

Ah, gotcha. Weirdly vague comment, but in that case, I agree.

[–] subignition@fedia.io 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's not weirdly vague, you just didn't know what they were talking about and didn't look into it in enough detail to understand.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

You know what? That’s entirely fair.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

It was headed for some important federal building in Washington DC

The US Capitol building (i.e. Congress), IIRC.

Some other people gave more context, and maybe I should have, too.

Used to be, if a plane got hijacked, the passengers were compliant and waited for it to be over. United 93 changed that forever.

The same thing seems to be happening with regard to regular citizens and ICE raiders, and I'm here for it.

Used to be, if a plane got hijacked, the passengers were compliant and waited for it to be over. United 93 changed that forever.

For a little more context, it was because the hijackers were holding it hostage until some demand was met, or they were flying it to Cuba or wherever, and then the plane and passengers would be released. On 9/11, they turned the planes into missiles with innocent passengers aboard, and they were all expected to die. When the passengers realized this, they took action.

Agreed, I love to see it.

I’ma homebody and live in bumfuck where thankfully almost nothing ever happens, but I’ve signed up for an action newsletter for news and information on how I can help, and I do my part to donate locally to my food bank and other things I care about. Dunno that it helps with the current state of things, but it’s something. Hopefully more opportunities to help in the future as I hate this draconian shit going down.

Apologies for misunderstanding your comment, that’s on me.

Apologies for misunderstanding your comment, that’s on me.

You weren't the only one. Your comment and the other guy's subsequent explanation helped me, too.

[–] borf@lemmynsfw.com 15 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The good ordinary people on board flight 93 heroically prevented the terrorists from causing even more destruction by banding together to fight them at the cost of their own lives

When we stand up together we can stop atrocities from happening. But we have to stand up and we can't wait and see.
