Disguised as sci-fi? You're aware Star Trek has always been a episodic space opera correct? It's not like a new divergent thing.

This show was a joke. A teenage high-school/college drama that "Prodigy" handled better. The new Q in SNW is a joke for pointless lol-episodes since his first apparition. The wtf-episodes VS "serious" episodes ratio, where things actually happen, is all over the place. There's isnt even a silver lining anymore. The Doctor Who writing of the latest SNW finale had good premises, but ended in the most scandalously nonsensical way. Modern Trek is painful fan-service and whimsical slop with no discourse. It always starts interesting, then it's just cynical IP milking. It has no depth. There's no message. Same thing with Discovery : interesting premises, one or two good seasons, then BLAM, non-stop fanfic grade slop. Don't get me started on the cosmic-wide fuel crisis caused by a whiny ~~cunt~~. Who's in charge of the fucking writing? Teenagers? Kidults? How has fanfic become the acceptable base level of writing?

Thankfully, there will always be Next Gen, DS9 and Voyager, so I'm okay. Lower Deck was funny too.

Ok so where is the disguise? It is sci-fi, I'm more confused as to how to think it wouldn't be sci-fi.

Sci-Fi is the disguise to a teenage college drama. It's the genre. It could have been a wonky dark magical school like in Wednesday, or I don't know, inner earth steam-punk or something. Trek is a skin, it's been used to write TV slop and in the case of THAT show, worse : Netflix slop.

There is no point in arguing with people who don't understand what Trek is when they never seen it.

Maybe we'll be lucky to see real trek again.

Oh you're adorable.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah that's still scifi. You're confusing subgenre and genre. You're implying star Trek was a scifi adventure and now it's a scifi drama.

The only way it wouldn't be sci-fi is if it's non fiction.

Yes, that's what I said, in fewer words. Trek is slapped as a skin on narrative formulas, and the formulaic wine in that narrative cup has been bad for a few too many consecutive times.

This show was badly written. It should have gone way deeper and grittier between the protagonist and Captain Shakra-Opener. She's the one responsible for him loosing his mother for most of his life, and he will not even try to kill her a little bit? -and make the show about that and how it gets from there? Forgiveness, reparation, etc. Another one: the protagonist is left alone as a kid in space and there isn't even serious trauma or disfunctionality resulting from that?

Where are the traumas? Where is the psychological coherency? Where have the opportunities for deep writing gone? Even the photonic plot was botched and expedited in a couple episodes, and it was the most interesting one, they just parentality-porned it in the cringiest of way. Same thing with the finale, it was cringe.

There was much more depth to exploit and violence to mend. The fact that they chose shallowness in writing condemned it. Star Trek is supposedly progessive, and Progressivism stems from trauma. The need to change stems from trauma, oppression, violent, dark stuff.

Modern writing of Trek is just lib slop, because it wants the progress but never want to think about the causes:

A young child is taken from his mother, his origins, because of a "government official" who thought they were doing good at the time. Later, this same "government official" (written as a caricature of a lib white savior) just takes this (their own) victim under their wing to "raise them" (enroll in Trek Academy) and help them "find their mother" (their origin). And of course, because this shallow writing can't aknowledge pain and trauma, the protagonist says yes and, little by little, gives in. Because, after all, Captain Shakra-Opener was right all along. The revengeful, spirited savage has been tamed by the same hand that litteraly stole his mother and childhood.

To me this show was the libest, white-saviorest thing ever written in Trek about colonization, be it a conscious or unconscious will of the writers. It should have been waaaaaay messier and darker to be a good show. Unconfortable. Radical.

Sorry for the long answer.
