Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

You will never get me with your garbage Fedora distro. I tried all variants over multiple years, multiple releases and I had nothing but issues. I would genuinely rather deal with Canonical's nonsense than Red Hat's. I hate Rad Hat.

[–] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 38 points 5 days ago (3 children)

That's wild to me it's like the only distro family that ever didn't have constant issues for me. I'm convinced there's some lottery system that assigns us all to a distro at birth and it's our life's mission to find it

[–] Damage@feddit.it 12 points 5 days ago

I've been using it for years and it's the only one I feel I can safely recommend.

Sad that it's owned by IBM now.

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yes, but that distro is Debian for everybody, it just takes some longer, some never find...

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 3 points 4 days ago

You misspelled NixOS.

[–] Toga77@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Same. I broke Ubuntu many times until I finally found Fedora.

So stable I can't break it apparently.

I broke popOS, Mint, and Fedora. CachyOS is my assigned distro at birth.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Try an atomic Fedora spin... Talk about stable.

[–] Toga77@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fair lmao.

I can only speak on my KDE Fedora install.

[–] chunk6235@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

Bazzite is atomic KDE fedora aimed at gaming PCs, and it's been rock solid for me for like 2 years at this point!

This is the first time I've had a Linux install survive this long. Normally fedora/Ubuntu/whatever would have shit the bed by now on either a an os or GPU driver update. I think I've had one moderate issue that took a bit to sort out (but the system was actually usable), but nothing breaking like before.

Finally glad to be free from windows (outside of work anyway)

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 5 days ago

I've been running Bazzite for a couple of years now, and it's technically built on Fedora. First experience with a Fedora distro, and couldn't be happier. Love it

[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Well, it's relatively stable until it isn't. If you don't have time to fuck around, use mint. Unless you need new packages, then you're fucked (maybe suse TW - but still don't expect everything to work, just decent stability).

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (5 children)

Elaborate please. I'm weighing installing Fedora for KDE. What kind of fucking around should I expect?

[–] chunk6235@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you've got a gaming GPU, bazzite is built on kde fedora and takes away 99% of the problems I had with the old school distro. It's an atomic distro so you can't fuck up the base is nearly as easily.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Nah, I've got an ancient machine with too little memory. However, you reminded me that I might want to look into NixOS just to check out how it works, for better or worse.

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Fedora is a very early adopter of new technologies, often even earlier than Arch. They were the first to adopt PulseAudio, the first to use Wayland sessions by default, the first to drop Xorg, and will likely be the first to drop lib32 packages. Any issues that may arise from major upgrades or changes, you are most likely to be exposed to them on Fedora.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Got it, thanks.

[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Eh it's kinda fine most of the time. But if you really don't have time to fix dependencies (via dnf) and constantly leave it for later, many broken things accumulate. It's usually fine (and usually works for at least a few years without problems, even on arch).

Edit: also the other comments.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thanks. Just to clarify, by 'fixing dependencies' you mean upgrading the packages?

[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Also that but, occasionally cleaning leftovers and fixing dependancy problems.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Thanks again for the info. However, I can't remember when I ever had to 'fix dependency problems' with APT. Maybe when I ran Debian Testing for a while, or if I added one too many external repos, or if I really really wanted to run two explicitly conflicting packages — but still it's such a foreign thing that I can't recall if it actually ever occurred. Apparently APT's reputation for most solid dependency resolution among package managers is quite well deserved.

[–] JadedBlueEyes@programming.dev 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The worst I've ever had happen could be fixed with the (prompted) --allow-erasing flag, and I messed around with additional repositories a lot

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

messaged around with additional repositories a lot

Gotta say again, as an APT user, I have no idea what "messaged around with additional repositories" means.

[–] cojo5@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

typo, messed instead of messaged?

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Possibly yes, but I don't think that makes the overall statement distinctly better.

[–] JadedBlueEyes@programming.dev 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As an APT user I'm sure you've also used PPAs and third party repositories for additional software and drivers? Pretty sure Ubuntu likes to add some by itself.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

That's familiar, yes.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Just use the kiddy distro. We don't have time for your questions! 🧐

Also there are probably thirty actual decent KDE distributions. OpenSuSE is one of the very old ones, there are many others.

Fedora Silverblue is by far the worst OS I've ever used. Well, tried to use, because, after a fresh install on a brand new laptop, literally everything crashed with a segfault. I could only login to the desktop and open the terminal. Everything else was broken. I tried with a different USB key, verified the ISO, switched to a different version... Utterly broken.
