When someone tells me they don't do politics I always answer: "I see… So you're a conservative then."
Yeah, that's a popular internetism lately, but it doesn't make it true.
There are plenty of people who don't want to talk about politics and would be likely to use that initial "I don't do politics" to try to brush a conversation about it aside who are trying to not discuss politics because they'd rather not die from an aneurysm at the massive surge in blood pressure they get if they start thinking about the mountain of recent bullshit and awful, or are simply trying to not dwell on it all to keep from killing themselves.
When you have no idea why someone doesn't want to discuss politics jumping right to accusing them of being a racist, transphobic, fascism loving, low education, child rape endorsing, evil piece of shit is completely unhinged.
There are all sorts of mental and medical conditions that could cause someone to be unable to handle those discussions with as fucked as things have gotten lately. You would of course hate anyone who seemed to be discriminating against those people, because ableism is bad, but instead of giving all humans grace as you know those issues exist you'd prefer to assume no one you're interacting with has them and treat them like shit until you're informed?
Maybe it would be better to just not treat other human being like shit? Or at the least not until you actually know their circumstances and situation and the truth of the matter instead of making a blind guess because of an internet meme.
I used to think that, but I have experienced a lot of it recently where they're not actually conservative bigots, they're just dumb
To the stupid, politics is scary and overwhelming, because they live in a small world of simple answers to complex problems
Often, this leads to conservative bigotry because social media etc. offers those simple answers
I live somewhere that is small, quiet, simple and beautiful
I have had to reassess my thoughts.
Yes: "I'm not political" does come from those who have privilege, but unlike 'Murica, when they have it explained how they benefit from others suffering, the usual response is (dare I say it...) something of an awakening
