Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

There are some exceptions at times (like pickles), but for the most part, I hate the texture of crunchy vegetables. Particularly onions, broccoli, and cauliflower, but pretty much any veggie, is worse uncooked or undercooked imo. I hate most raw vegetables by themselves or in salads, but undercooked ones may be even worse because I was promised and expecting something cooked. Crunchy peppers or onions ruin a pizza as one example. Under-done carrots and potatoes in a curry, which I had yesterday, is another perfect example.

This may not be a universally unpopular opinion but I definitely feel like I've had a lot of people seem surprised by me not liking raw veggies.

If you're eating raw onions (and to some extent broccoli and cauliflower) then you're a real one, alright. oO

One can never trust a person who loves raw onions. This is next level shit.

Edit: aww come on, it was a joke

Onions are meant to be eaten like an apple.

/if you're a psychopath

I like eating raw onions dipped in ranch.

They give me terrible heartburn every time, but I still do it cuz they are tasty af. Sweet onions like walla walla don’t have that heartburn problem as much but they also don't make me regret my life choices, so its not the same. Red onions are the sweet spot, still regrets but better flavor-to-misery ratio.

My dad ate them like apples, but only the super potent small white home grown ones. I didn't get this from him, at least not behaviorally, cuz I didn't really know him from 5-18. So its either in my genes, which is my present hypothesis, or onions are just actually great.

I've actually read comments from people who say they enjoy them that way!

I would certainly guess red, though. Eating a white one would almost be like macing yourself, methinks.

Raw onions come on burgers, hotdogs, and tacos fairly often. And broccoli and cauliflower come on veggie platters. In addition broccoli to me often seems barely steamed. That one is subject to a fairly fine line for me though. If you under or overcook it I'm gonna hate it either way.

I put thinly sliced purple onion on my burgers. It adds a mild onion flavor I like and extra crunch. Pretty much the opposite of your opinion.

Yeah that sounds... Bad, mmkay.

Raw onions come on burgers and also tacos fairly often.

I've rarely experienced that at commercial places across two major cities. Closest thing would be maybe red onions on some tacos. Red onions, because they're the mildest ones raw.

Usually I'll see raw onions on burgers at cookouts and such, for practical reasons. Nobody's forcing me to eat them if I don't want to, however.

And broccoli and cauliflower come on veggie platters.

Yes, I know. But unless you're like an art tourist or professional cocktail party goer, then I think you'll usually see those things cooked. Yeah, try them steamed, for example. They'll retain most of their vitamins, minerals, etc, while being less crunchy and more tasty.

Anyway, I'll leave you to it.

Raw white onion is an authentic topping for tacos and lots of restaurants serve them this way.

Of course, but the real issues range from Taco Bell to TexMex to comida auténtica preparation-style issues.

Let's not get it twisted, mate.

I dunno man, lately I've seen the onion thing on a lot of tacos and it's being touted as the authentic Mexican way (and white onions too). And the burger thing I'll admit is not incredibly common but it's happened to me many times over the years and it's always a shock. On hotdogs with chili it's basically standard.

Oven-roasting is wasted on a veg you like but perfect for one you don't, like broccoli. Cut into large bite sizes, put in a bowl and drizzle with a couple tablespoons of good oil, toss well. Spread over parchment or foil on a baking pan. Sprinkle with your favorite seasoned salt and pepper. Bake/roast at 400°F/200°C about 10-15 minutes or more if you like, until they are well charred, caramelized, shrunk, soft, and hardly taste like broccoli at all. To make them even better cut up an onion in big chunks and mix it in the same bowl.

There is no usage of raw onions where pickled onions are not superior.

My local cantina does habanero-pickled onions. There is hardly a meal I get there in which I don't add them!
