In retrospect the willingness of people to eat detergent for attention, the over commitment as a "joke" behavior, really heralded the modern political landscape.
That shit didn't start with tidepods, it's been around as long as humans and always will be
If people start joking about something, some idiots will do it as a joke, then more idiots will do it seriously without realizing it's a joke.
It's the reason literally means both literally and figuratively now
And even kind of related to the awesome/awful switch when Christians finally learned what their Bible said about their god. Before it was in English they just listened to nonsense Latin and then what the priest said it meaned.
Once they learned their God was "awesome", they started using that as good and awful as bad. A complete 180 in very short order.
It's just a long game of "telephone", and kids in particular are really fucking bad at it. Every generation of kids have their version of tidepods. Social Media and old news broadcasts on YouTube just leave evidence.
