Yeah, the author was writing it over the course of a couple years, releasing chapters semi-regularly.
The writing is solid, and you can tell they poured a ton of passion into it, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I mentioned it and hubs immediately went on an unhinged rant about something called rationalism, "a snowcrash style ocean flotilla cult," and his trust fund friend who hates homeless people (in his defense he did get stabbed but I can also hear him in my head saying the kind of dumbass thing that would get him stabbed). I'm still lost so I'm just going to keep trying to finish Interesting Times by Terry Prachett which I got for $1 as a paperback at my library's used book sale last fall.
I don't know about any of that. The book is largely a what-if story, with the main focus being a look at how Harry might have navigated the wizarding world if his parents were alive during his childhood and raised him to question everything in life and taught him how to use the scientific method to understand the things he observes in reality.
Yeah that's basically what anyone who knows a lot about the culture that formed in the wake of the fanfic thinks. That and the fact that members of that community are too insufferable for lemmy
Yeah hubs is right about these things about 90% of the time (me not being on those parts of the internet often) but nobody bats 100%
Yeah, I've had the misfortune of meeting some of them irl. Like, theoretically I'm all for people engaging in informal academics, striving to be more thoughtful, and generally trying to challenge their thoughts and be better. However, these people keep going on insane paths such as inventing a hell based on artificial intelligence using game theory to ensure it gets created and so fucking much race science.
Unfortunately these people are increasingly relevant to everyone's lives. Sam Altman comes out of it, as did the effective altruism movement and Sam Bankman Freid. They've got a strong following in Silicon Valley and have some overlap with the technofascism movement coming out of it.
There's a community on lemmy to mock them at their craziest if anyone's interested called sneerclub.
