Today I got hit with the "china spyware" claim and would love some debunking (arxiv.org)

I visited a talk on an event of the german chaos computer club and although I know about the casual chauvinism in these circles, I was appaled at the casual racist remarks AND I'm curious about the "china spyware android" claim. Knowing from my experience with ML so far its probably bs or overblown but I'm curious if there is a thorough debunk already.

The person holding the talk claimed that chinese android phones came loaded with spyware and I gound the linked study that is claimed to prove it. I'll check it more thoroughly tomorrow but so far it reads like "different legislation, get over it" but i'm not sure if its even easier to debunk.

Without getting into the specifics: China has no reason or desire to alienate most of the world, they want friendly relations more than anything else. Here's the US's proven mass surveillance record, so they should not be trusted when it comes to making claims against their enemies.

US tech companies have had a near monopoly over communication, making these claims nothing more than projection, in an attempt to alienate the PRC from potential allies as part of the US trade war against China.

I only browsed through the chapter index in the desceiption but it doesn't cover the most important aspect. You don't want your digital information infrastructure in the hands of genocidal countries. In India whatsapp is so ingrained it is preposterous and no one has talked about it even since the tariff drama started. The ratio of SMS to Whatsapp messages J receive from businesses is like 1:5 and from government services it is something like 1.5:1. Stuff like "Great Firewall" is effective protectionism that has allowed indigenous tech industry to exist and prosper. India provides an endless supply of tech workers to the west which is a source of so called pride but if Meta, Microsoft and Google stop servicing us our country falls apart. We were able to cobble up our version of truth social though.
