Guess im never looking at reddit ever again lmao

The moderators are so liberal, they cannot stand to hear a difference of opinion.

Don't get me wrong, it's a better experience over all, but basically group dynamics and mob mentality are the same, just at an acceptably lower volume.

I think the real strength of Lemmy isn't anything fancy, it's just that there's fewer people and that creates a more communal vibe and leaves a little more room for conversation.

It also has a host of knock on effects: better moderation, visibility without a ton of upvotes, longer conversations....

I don't know if anyone thinks it--I'm pretty good at arguing against positions nobody's taking--but overall people on Lemmy aren't any different.

I finally made the leap to Lemmy. It's a little confusing, but it's doing a pretty good job of scratching that reddit itch. Some random thoughts:

1. I just need a place to spit out my random thoughts and have random conversations and make random jokes; it's really not that demmanding. Do I miss having 400 upvotes instead of 11? Sure, but the main thing is that I'm communicating with people.

2. Definitely get an app. I'm using Voyager on my phone with a KBM--how I mostly get around.

3. Those 400 upvotes come at a cost--posts are dead within a few hours. There's almost no point to leave a new comment in an active thread--nobody is going to see it. And there's also no point in leaving a detailed explanation of anything on reddit for the same reason.

On Lemmy, I'll get replies to posts and comments DAYS later, and people seem more willing to be helpful; maybe because things are less contentious, and maybe it's just people are naturally more helpful to strangers in smaller communities (see cities vs small towns)...

So really, the only downside to lemmy--the small size of the population--ends up being one the best things about it.

4. It's definitely nice not having to compulsively check to see if my comments have been shadowbanned--which happened quite frequently and seemingly without reason on reddit.

5. It's nice to be in a space where I can be more frank about political remedies.

6. It's nice that I can view the comment histories of people I'm talking with to determine if they're an inveterate asshole or just having a bad day (only found one asshole so far).

That's it! 10/10. I'll try not to burn my reddit account in case I have a tough question, but I honestly think a technical question is more likely to be answered on Lemmy with it's small platoon of nerds with little to chew on than the hordes of ignorami on reddit rapidly trying to solve everyone's problem by free associating the title of the post.

Is there an orientation manual for Lemmy? Honestly, Lemmy isn't even the first DDG result for Lemmy (the first result is the Motorhead founder).

What I really want to know is how to pull in forums from other servers because I'm used to a very curated firehouse of content from Reddit and Lemmy so far seems more about making do with what conversation and audience are available. I found a page from 3 years ago describing a somehwat programmery process to do so....

Also, is there a place to find similar reddit subs? My favorite sub on reddit was the subreddit NOT about literally fucking cars but about the importance of micromobility in a car-dominated landscape. Also: cats who look like Ron Perlman.

I'm on day one of my third temp 7-day sitewide reddit ban this past year. Before that, I was a daily participator on reddit for over 10 years with no site-wide actions.

I thought it might be fun to share the story of my bans. Feel free to share yours.

The first one was for summarizing Bill Maher's views on fat women, old women, and transgendered people. This was understandably determined to be hate speech by the AI, but was upheld by human appeal.

The second one, I don't even remember clearly. I think I may have been criticizing Zionism on somewhere, probably a popular news subreddit. One thing you have to keep in mind is they delete the offending comment and so you have to guess at what your offense might be; then you only have 250 characters to defend yourself. The ban was done by AI. About five days after my seven-day ban ended, I got the notification: Your ban has been overturned. Thanks!

The third one just happened, so it's fresh in my memory. I wanted to talk about something I found crazy on one of my favorite TV shows: a black woman, mother of two black children and wife of a black man, who was in her 30s living the United States had her FIRST social justice epiphany--and it was about press freedoms in Guatamela. The post was shadowbanned. I commented on another thread, warning a user that the mods would come along soon to shadowban any comments on race. Both our comments were shadowbanned, and thereafter, I was perma-shadowbanned on that sub--any comment I made was immediately sent to the shadow realm.

I looked for discussion about the show's treatment of race (which would be interesting since the show did not--as the subreddit does--ignore the issue entirely) and found nothing more recent than 14 years ago. The sub had been wiped clean of any discussion of race on the show.

I wrote the mods and asked them to either a) lift my shadow ban or b) ban me permanently.

To make things easier for them, I also called them racist cowards. An hour later, I received my temp ban for bullying and harrassment.

My appeal simply laid out the facts: they objectively demonstrated both cowardice (by shadowbanning) and racism (for shadowbanning discussion on race) therefore it is not bullying to call them racist cowards. Any conversation forum that shadowbans members for conversing is obviously lost, and then further sitewide bans them for complaining, is clearly lost.

A while back, someone made a post on an AITAH type subreddit, then updated it saying it was generated with AI. Like 3/4 of the comments left after the update were responding to the story as if there wasn't a big bold THIS STORY IS FAKE update at the top. I've been trying to find this post again for weeks, but no variation of "reddit AITAH AI generated post" offers anything useful on any search engines. Am I remembering wrong? Did I dream this up???

So, I've now had a 9 year account and a 13 year account both permabanned.

They've linked them as the same user and banned me for a benign post on r/pics.

I lost all faith in reddit when they changed the api then Relay for reddit stopped working.

Base model app is shit.

Comments constantly erase and empty endpoint error.

Can't even say 'I like that player two energy on super Mario bros', because that's 'violent'.

I've posted tens of thousands of comments and only recently had issues.

Got banned for saying 'Elon simps in our midst' referring to mods....who proved my point.

And finally now, they are paywalling shit soon.

Adios.

Anyway, I left digg in the great exodus for reddit, now this looks like my new home.

Rant over lol.

My old Reddit account gets regularly scrubbed because Reddit keeps restoring shit. First, all posts get deleted (again), then all comments get replaced with crap, and after a few months, they too get deleted.

A mod looked at my profile and couldn't wrap his little brain around it. Hundreds of thousands of comments and post karma, but no posts. How? LOL
