Community Rules

  1. Be respectful of one another

Please treat others with respect. Being respectful means :

  1. We do not promote ultra conservative ideas

Although Discussion around mainstream conservative Islamic theology is allowed in this community, we do not allow promotion of such conservative ideas. Therefore, posts & comments that promote such ultra-conservative ideas & websites will be removed.

  1. All contributions should be made in good faith

Contributing in good faith means being open to considering the arguments made by the other side, either in whole or in part. Rather than rejecting the entire progressive/conservative argument, what parts of the argument can you agree upon? Posts simply aiming to antagonize, preach, or pronounce takfir over an individual or group would are obvious examples of bad faith contributions.

  1. Don't proselytize

Submissions seeking to proselytize other religions or no religion, or promoting one sect or denomination over others will be removed. Posts/Comments linking to non-lslamic or Salafist sources may be removed where such links might serve to legitimize kufr, Salafist, or extremist modes of thinking.

  1. No flamewars, dramas, or brigading other Lemmy communities

While memes, screenshots, and images involving other Lemmy communities are permitted, any identifying features must be omitted or censored. Please black out or obscure any username.

If you are posting images or screenshots of other social media websites then censoring names isn't necessary.

  1. Memes (weekends only), screenshots, and other images

While memes, screenshots, and images involving other communities are permitted, any identifying features must be omitted or censored. Please black out or obscure any usernames. Also, memes may only be posted on weekends.

  1. Violations of Community rules 3 times within the period of 6 months will result in a Community ban

At their discretion, moderators may issue up to three warnings for rule violations before banning a user. Be aware that more serious offenses (e.g., violating your User Agreement with Lemmy) may result in an instant and permanent ban. Moreover, "at the discretion of the moderators" means that the moderators may opt to permanently ban any user without prior warning if they deem the rule violation to be particularly serious.

  1. We have zero tolerance for hate speech

We will remove any content promoting violence or hatred against individuals or groups based on any of the following attributes:

  1. Use English

All users are required to use English in all posts and parent comments. Users must provide an English translation if posting materials from non-English sources. Videos must either be in English or have English subtitles. We also understand that certain non-English words are part of the standard discourse of Islam and as such some discretion some non-English words are allowed without translation (e.g., Allah).

Replying to the parent comments in other languages is allowed

  1. Mental Health Rule

We are not a mental health service. Please be aware that content may be removed if the community has concerns about the mental health or wellbeing of a user. We reserve the right to contact Lemmy admin should a user express thoughts about suicide or serious self-harm. In some cases, users expressing extreme levels of anxiety around a religious issue may be asked to consult with either an Islamic scholar or a mental health professional, depending upon the circumstances.

  1. Report the trolls and move on

Please do not engage with trolls. While trolls are sometimes difficult to detect and to discern from genuine posters, if you believe that you have encountered a troll, please cut off all contact. Report and move on. You know the saying: "Don't feed the trolls"!

  1. Suspicious account activity

Accounts may be banned if there is a marked incongruence between account age and account karma. We have taken this step to cull farmed troll accounts.

Salaam friends,

I hope you're all doing well.

I created this space to support open, inclusive, and thoughtful discussion around Islam from a progressive perspective — a place where people can explore faith, justice, identity, and community without fear of gatekeeping or bigotry.

But right now, I'm finding it hard to keep up.

I'm already moderating several other communities across Lemmy (including on other instances), and it's starting to take a toll, both to my Mental Health, as well as the stress of it all.

If you care about this space and want to help keep it active, welcoming, and safe, I’d love to have you join as a mod.

Experience is great, but not required — just a commitment to the values of respect, inclusion, and growth.

Feel free to comment down below, if you're interested!

Peace and solidarity, – Teknevra

Al-Ghazali is considered a great classical scholar of Islam, but some of his views on women were shockingly problematic.

Sofia Tsourlaki, PhD researcher and lecturer of Islamic studies, argues that the Persian scholar's problematic views about women were shaped by unreliable & fabricated hadiths as well as misogynistic narrations from other traditions which held contempt for women. Here is an insightful video with references.

https://youtu.be/-RSnrc3ChU0?is=75e-pdbDykyK068P

Here is an article on the same topic: https://countercurrents.org/2024/07/the-patriarchal-mystique-al-ghazali-and-the-subordination-of-women/

Al-Ghazali' made many disputable proclamations about women, endorsing beatings as punishment for defiance and portraying marriage as a form of acceptable servitude. He also insisted on the belief that women's nature is mixed with that of the devil, that women's minds aren't suited for education, and he was quick to provide a rundown of intrinsic female imperfections. It is worth mentioning that in stark contrast, Ibn Rushd (Averroes) held women in high regard. He rejected the notion that women were intellectually inferior or inherently sinful. His writings advocated for women's education, believing their minds were just as capable as men's. He even challenged the idea that women were unfit for leadership roles, suggesting that a woman with the necessary qualifications could govern just as effectively as a man. This progressive stance on female potential and education placed Ibn Rushd firmly ahead of his time.

This example supports the argument that the "Muslim world" took a wrong turn in history, by rejecting the legacy and methodology of Ibn Rushd and by accepting the Ghazali-inspired Islamic orthodoxy.

Greetings, and Ramadan Mubarak (I believe). I have a several students who are currently observing Ramadan. There are snacks around in class because I don't want them in general to go hungry.

This may be obscenely stupid, but are there any things I can do (within normal religious expectations) to assist? A nice beverage or some gum or something?

I can't physically do without food anymore for more than a brief period due to illness, so I may be over sensitive regarding food.

There are some egregious misinterpretations here leading to harmful codes of law, here are some of them summarized.

-Privileging the Hanafi maddhab (the Hanafi rite) of sunni Islam, and their adherents

-Discrimination against those who do not follow the ashari/maturidi aqeedahs (ashari/maturidi creeds) of sunni islam, and their adherents. For example discrimination against followers of the Athari aqeedah (athari creed).

-arbitrary discrimination against Christians and Jews

-lack of civil-judicial rights including arbitrary imprisonment, sentencing, and punishment

-reopening slavery outside of the context of war

-allowing husbands to implement Ta’zir punishments (which are islamically not for husbands to do)

-allowing husbands to physically discipline their wives with no limits (no limits has no basis in islam)

  • an ultra strict interpretation of gender segregation (which will be used to justify restricting female students from schools)

-classism by allowing less punishment for middle class over lower class

  • giving extra, unislamic privileges to scholars - specifically in civil-judicial rights to escape criminal penalties , which is unislamic

-criminalizing any criticism of the government

And possibly more I missed.

An ophthalmologist in Tehran has documented more than 400 eye injuries from gunshots in a single hospital, as overwhelmed medical staff struggle to cope with the toll of an increasingly violent crackdown on nationwide protests by Iranian authorities.

Three doctors, in messages forwarded to the Guardian on Monday, described overwhelmed hospitals and emergency wings overflowing with protesters who had been shot. Medical staff said the gunshot wounds were mostly concentrated on protesters' eyes and heads - a tactic that rights groups said authorities used against demonstrators in the country's 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

"[Security forces] are deliberately shooting at the head and the eyes. They want to damage the head and the eyes so they can no longer see, the same thing they did in [2022]," said a doctor in Tehran. The doctor added that many of the patients had to have their eyes removed and were blinded.

Iran's demonstrations, which started on 28 December over a sudden dip in the value of the country's currency, have since turned into the country's biggest anti-government protest movement since 2009. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across the country each night, chanting anti-government slogans such as "death to the dictator", a reference to the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Idk if people already saw this, but Daniel Haqiqatjou just got denounced by the dawah bros. Like, collectively. They dropped a joint statement telling Muslims not to take knowledge from him.

They accuse him of undermining tawhid, validating shirk, being gravely dangerous to Muslims, being a liability to dawah, and they urge the community to avoid him entirely as a religious source. In dawah Islamic terms, accusing someone of validating shirk and undermining tawhid is takfir, even if you avoid using the word. So, they basically takfir-ed him.

Remember, there's no scholars involved. Instead it's random YouTubers, podcasters, dawah bros, and so-called influencers.

I don't like Daniel but the deepest irony is that Daniel isn't in anyway become "liberal" or "progressive" at all. He's still very conservative. His only sin was exposing wahhabism

And many of the same people signing this have defending child marriage, slavery, accused others of bidah, incited mob violence, and harassed women online and some even cheated on their wives. Now they suddenly present themselves as protectors against extremism, guardians of the "ummah" lol.

Enemies of Islam often like to quote 65:4 to claim that the Quran permits marrying underage girls.

In this verse the word NISA is used. NISA means WOMAN, not girls.

Definition of a woman: an adult female human being.

So she must be an adult

Definition of an adult: a person who is fully grown or developed.

This ends the argument of Islam allowing marriage to underage girls.

Also 65:6 just two verses after it mentions wives breastfeeding. No 9 yr old on earth breastfeeds.

Anyone who claims the Islam permits marrying children has something damaged in their brain

They actively support child marriage and say that going against child marriage is just "westernism".

Omar Suleiman dismisses valid criticism of the timeline as 'revisionism' and I think that we should be more concerned about children involved in and around the community of this institute and Omar Suleiman himself.

I linked the specific page.
