Kinda a punk rock track about facing adversity

ffprobe of ffmpeg fame say:

  • bitrate: 256kb/s
  • Stream: #0:0: Audio: mp3 (mp3float), 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 256 kb/s

Is it better to buy the CD and rip or or is that about as good as it gon' get? Should I quit while I'm ahead

Its literally nowhere else online in a hq format besides YouTube (lq) and various random blogs/sites

No FLACs :( until I change that

Noemi is the first Tweakbench DAW. Instead of a linear timeline, you wire composition building blocks - patterns, generators, instruments, transformers, and effects - into a node graph that creates…

looks kind of like sunvox, but with a modular composition system instead of a tracker.

I was looking for some software where I can build up tracks on a loop, like the ntrack tutorial does, but something a bit more free and open source. In the tutorial it uses probably a soundfont thing, builds a drum track, then layers a piano bit etc.

LMMS seems to be an option, but is there something super simple and intuitive out there for this?

Thanks

AI Disclosure

I'm an experienced software developer and have been doing this for a very long time (way before LLMs). This is the first plugin I've released since LLMs have taken over software development.

  • LLMs were used to aid in the development process
  • I use a custom agentic harness focused on:
    • Speeding up bulk work
    • Not making engineering / design decisions
  • LLMs were never used to make important choices
  • ALL ARTWORK is 100% human made
    • I have been using Blender for over a decade now
  • I understand all of the code (as well as I normally would at least)
  • I stand by this product and will support it moving forward
  • Despite LLM use, this represents 6+ months of full time work

Thanks so much for checking this out!

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or want to chat. I will be watching this thread as well.

This Jam had many purposes. I have been working on this track based on samples of some old public domain tunes, and wanted to experiment with structure and elements.

I also wanted to finally start practicing using my M8 for live perfomance / Jams. Still just scraping the surface. But given that the M8 has been my goto music device and has me making a lot more songs then in a long time i really want it to be able to be a part of both my "jam" and "song writing" brains. :)

To our friends, artists, partners, collaborators, and community:

After three months of hard work, and three months of extraordinary loyalty from you, I am pleased to share that a definitive agreement has now been signed for Native Instruments to be acquired by inMusic.

Two iconic music technology companies, with decades of shared respect for this industry and the people who make music in it, are coming together to build something greater than either could alone. Our NKS hardware and MPC Editions collaboration last year was the beginning of this story. Today, we look ahead to a common future.

inMusic has spent three decades building and growing the brands that creators rely on every day — Akai Professional, Moog Music, Denon DJ, Numark, Rane, M-Audio and more. They understand what it means to build tools that musicians love. And they understand what Native Instruments means to our customers and community.

DXM planted the seeds and actually directly inclined me towards behaviors or ways of using music and my time under it that i would probably refer to now as parameter automation, modulation and many other sound experiments

I mostly compose and record on my own or with people on only the sections of songs I need them on but now I have some people who would all like to play together but I don't know how to run a session like that. The primary goal would be for all us to get some practice and hone our technique on our instruments. Kinda like a workout club.

Do any of you do any kind of warm-up or exercises when playing with others?

When I practice an instrument I usually run through chords and scales and work on my finger exercises. I just met a drummer who can't practice drums at her house so she's going to come over here to play so I thought it would be cool to have some exercises lined up that don't involve us knowing the same songs. Most of the people I've played with in the past just want to make noise at the other people playing and aren't trying to build something together. I'd like exercises that help us form a tighter group so we can be better when playing whatever songs we decide to play when the time comes.

One thing I thought of initially was to play the same scale practices on the other instruments while the drummer does paradiddles or whatever. Thinking it would be starting at 50 BPM and building up to 180 BPM and then holding that for as long as we can.

Another idea was to only play one note at a locked tempo but vary the dynamics in way that is determined by a vocalist or one of those hairy potters waving around a wand.

If someone invited you over to something like this would you attend or would you run away? I can see how it might seem boring but I'd like some kind of structure to our sessions to get us going.

It’s a chance to be part of our mission to remix the world, one sound at a time – and a great creative challenge to work with sound in a new, open and interesting way.

This spring, there are more than 200 recordings to choose from, covering 38 countries.

The project is open to musicians, composers and sound artist anywhere in the world, and you have until Friday 5 June to create your piece.

You simply pick a recording that speaks to you, and reimagine that sound. Alternatively, we can assign a recording to you at random if you prefer the element of chance!

Strange start to a post... A lifelong friend of mine was euh, killed recently. The kind of stuff you only see in movies. Somehow it started a creative musical process. I sing out of tune, but the making was more important than the result. It was kind of a therapeutic.
I do everything with Teenage Engineering OPxy and OP1field. A long time ago I used to play on the train with a Yamaha QY70. Didn't do anything for 10 - 15 years. Some years ago I started DAW'ing. But starting up computer and cubase, sitting behind a computer, in a fixed room, cables, linking plug-ins ... I hate it.
Enter Teenage Engineering. Just power it on and continue on your project or try something new.. Wherever, whenever. You don't need both machines. Got the field first. As a lot of people discovered, it's a totally different approach and more akin to a band rehearsing live. Missed midi/sequencing. Added the xy and now I have my perfect "studio".
My workflow is 80% of the track is made on the OPxy. Then I record to OP1f. There I add extra sounds or beats but mainly vocals (also great vocoder).
You can listen to the project mentioned above here, on soundcloud.

TLDR (I’m very long-winded): this YT video took measurements of three different audio cables, including a 200€ one, and found differences where there should be none. My physics knowledge (and general consensus among the scientific community) says the measurements of the different cables should be identical or near-identical — or I am, at least, under that impression. My own measurements, because the channel does provide the files, confirm that the expensive 200€ cable does measure differently from the others. But surely something else must be causing this? Please help me find out what that is, Lemmy!

Below, I go into a little more detail and context, and I go through what I have tried, etc.; I tried splitting everything up into chunks to make it easier to read, but I was never good at being succinct. Sorry about that 😬 :P

Context: What Am I Talking About?

Firstly, I should clarify that this isn’t relevant to most people, only really physics and audio-technology nerds. But I’m desperate. This question has been tormenting me for days...

I should provide some context. For some reason, YouTube gave me a rather odd video suggestion. I am very interested in audio technology, mixing, and mastering, but I’m not a snake-oil audiophile type. I guess you could call me a lover-of-audio, e.g., audiophile, but I don’t attach myself to that community. So you can imagine my confusion when this video was suggested to me on YouTube.

For anyone unwilling to click on an ambiguous YT link like that, here is a brief description: audiophile guy (who believes that cables affect sound) compares three cables, two of which are "cheap" (e.g., approx. 50€) and one of which is expensive (like 200€ — for a cable). His conclusion is ultimately (yes, I watched that far) that they don’t really affect sound, because they’re just interconnects (so RCA cables), and not speaker or power cables. But he actually records each cable and provides those music files — which means I can compare them as well...

By "records each cable," I mean that he used each cable to connect a CD-player to a pre-amp (for some reason) and then an analogue-to-digital convert (ADC) into his computer, where he can record the output; this way he gets just the supposed difference the cables make. I realize that the CD-player might have some inconsistencies, since CDs are a moving medium, but jitter compensation and stuff like that is very advanced these days, so this is getting pretty close to an accurate measurement of the cables, I think (correct me if I’m wrong!).

In the video, this guys claims that the measurements show a difference between the cables. This debate around cables is something I thought was quite contested, so I naturally decided to download the tracks (which he provides in the description) and compare them myself. Here’s what happened.

My Own Testing: They Don’t Null

So I downloaded his recordings, phase-aligned (which they weren’t already) everything and normalized to peak (which, again, was necessary, and creates the lowest delta compared to LUFS, etc.), and then null-tested. That means I inverted the phase of one, played two of the files at the same time, and thus got the delta between them.

The Mogami and Belden cables (the cheap ones) are nearly identical; there is a slight difference in the null-test, but it is statistically small enough, that I attribute it to measurement inconsistency (e.g., CD-player, DAC, or ADC performance, but also maybe natural conditions, etc.). I especially suspect — given that most differences occur at higher frequencies but aren’t really audible when listening — a jitter related issue, causing the timing to be just a little off, thus creating a delta in the higher frequencies. This could be due to the CD-player, but I have no idea.

...the Neotech (the expensive one), however, is significantly different.

Firstly, he provides the file for the Neotech cable with a significant phase delay compared to the others, of about 50 ms, and it is also about 0.02 db louder than the others. This alone makes it sound better, but when I correct this volume and phase difference — it still sounds better, and the null-test confirms that it is still quite different (we're talking differences up to -40 db here, which should definitely be audible).

It turns out, the volume difference actually changes throughout the song; meaning that in some places the difference is 0.01 db, and in others 0.03 db. But I can correct for that! I don’t know why it happens (someone smarter than me, please explain), but I can correct for it... And yet, the null test still shows a clear difference (especially when the singer makes s-sounds, i.e., sibilance).

Please Help Me

What is going on? My physics knowledge tells me this should be impossible. I can only imagine that for some reason the Neotech is more conductive, or something like that, and therefore recreates the harsh and very fast dynamics of sibilance more accurately. But the difference in conductivity should not be enough to cause that... I really am confused. Someone with more expertise please explain this!

For context, I cannot blind test ABX the Neotech. This is very subtle stuff here. But the null test shows differences as high as -45 db when the singer does those s-sounds and everything has been normalized. So clearly something is happening (and again, this is phase aligned and normalized and everything). So what could it possibly be?

Lemmy, please show me what I have missed! Show me the obvious error I or the video creator made. Sorry to make such a long post on c/asklemmy, but I don’t know where else to ask.

It's a so-called "music tracker" software which is a specialized kind of application that emerged in the 80s for composing 8-bit-style music.

In general, it has a rather rigid structure, best suited for straightforward 4/4 melodies, where you can throw in some effects here and there. But the nice thing about that is that you're very quick to produce good-sounding results, even if they may be simplistic.

The most recent update (which was apparently more than a year ago 😅) added a synthesizer to create your own samples more easily. You need samples to make each note play a tone, so this makes it even easier to jump into. As a result, I am having quite a bit of fun with it, again, which is why I decided to post here. 🙂

It is free and open-source (GPLv3).

I recently discovered this wonderful compressor by Jon Ville, and I thought I'd share. It's pay-what-you-want, including $0, so basically free, and it sounds great. Especially the look-ahead and program-dependent release really sound fantastic and super transparent. Highly recommend!

I am currently looking into getting a keyboard to use in jamming sessions. I have so far been partial to Roland GO:KEYS 5 (this over the 3 due to the additional inputs and an acceptable imo price difference). This (around 500 EUR) is around the max I want to give for it.

But, as far as I can tell, it does not have a proper loop function. It has a layered recording-function, but this would require me to play through the full song.

So I have two questions:

  1. Are there any keyboards anyone of you would recommend in roughly the same price range that has a looper?

  2. Could I use my Boss RC-5 for this, plug the keyboard into input A and plug it back into the keyboard from output A? I would like to avoid buying a new speaker for this, and tge loop pedal would also be connected to my guitar and to the amp.

Hey all!

I've been hired to put together some underscoring/ clipped up karaoke tracks for an 80s themed pantomime, and while I could try to put together pop songs from scratch, I'd rather be able to just download from YouTube or find plugins to put into Logic.

I tried using an Ai software to pull the lyrics out of Never Gonna Give You Up so I could just have the backing for the musical number, but it sounds like I'm running karaoke off of a 2004 Nokia flip phone. Any good places to start?

The nice thing as since this is pantomime it is legally protected from copyright laws as it is parody, if anyone cares.

Video description:

As many of you have already noticed, I have taken my music off Spotify entirely... for the time being. The reason is their new updated terms and conditions which in short format says they can take all of our content that we put out there, and use it for any reason, purpose, altered or not... and not pay us a single dime for it! As if the tiny fraction of a pittance they already are paying us for streams wasn't enough (or little depending on how you look at it). As Josh Raines and Krystle Delgado so eloquently explains it (clips in this video), it is a total disaster for the creators. So therefore I took a long weighted choice to remove my music from Spotify for now - if they change the conditions, I may of course put it back up again.

Likewise with AI contend - which is something I just cannot abide. AI is fine for long boring Teams meeting summaries and help with programming, searching etc, but when it's taking over and flooding the domain of us hard working musicians and graphical artists among others, it's simply not acceptable! I create all my work by hand – brick by brick, note for note – always! There are no shortcuts here, everything is played manually and recorded painstakingly, just as with all the helpers I have doing guitars, sax, vocals and other instruments.

The only tiny AI help I use, is when I sometimes want to do a remix or a cover of a great song and have to separate the vocals or other instruments so I can do my own backing tracks. And for that I use lalal.ai since I don't have access to the original recordings and probably never will anyway. That, and the starting point when I do mastering after mixdown using Izotope's Ozone plugin, but I always end up dialing all those parameters way down and change just about everything anyway.

So on all my channels you will now see the logo I created, showing that this is an AI-free zone and that you can truly rely on the fact that you are listening to someone's hard work and that your money actually goes to someone who hopefully deserves those little pennies.

For those wanting to brand their own work, feel free to copy and use the logos if you feel like it:
