EXCLUSIVE: The award-winning filmmakers behind upcoming Sudanese feature Blue Card have formally withdrawn from the Berlinale Co-Production Market after being refused visas by the German embassy in Cairo, which claimed they were a “migration risk”.

Director Mohammed Alomda, producer Amjad Abu Alala and writer Paula Thabet were due to travel from Egypt this week to attend the co-pro platform, which takes place as part of the European Film Market (EFM) from February 14-17.

However, on February 12, the team were informed their visa applications had been rejected, citing uncertainty over why they were travelling to Germany and whether they intended to return.

An option to take part remotely was offered by the market, which the team originally accepted but later declined before their full withdrawal.

“Why should we take part remotely when we have been made to feel unwanted by this country,” said Alala, the Cairo-based Sudanese director of Venice award-winner You Will Die At Twenty and producer of Cannes award-winner Goodbye Julia. He has also previously served as a jury member for the Berlinale’s Generation section.

ATHENS, Feb 16 (Reuters) - The Israeli producer of hit spy thriller "Tehran" was found ‌dead on Sunday at a hotel room ‌in Athens, Greek police officials said while a probe ​into the incident is underway.

The body of the 52-year-old woman, identified as Dana Eden, was found after a relative made several failed ‌attempts to reach ⁠her.

The case is being treated as suicide based on evidence and ⁠testimonies, the police officials said.

My wife and I watched this movie last night and we were speechless for twenty minutes. It’s breathtaking. The biggest question that came to my mind was this: How had I never heard of it?

I dare say this is by design. You can check the Wiki page on it’s production for more on this.

But more importantly: watch it. Start to finish. Start spreading it. I can’t think of anything more important than simply spreading this movie right now. For supporters of Bernie… it’s a slam dunk jaw dropper. But for MAGAs it’s a mirror. And that’s the most beautiful element.

I'm, uhh, watching it

And it's, erm, alright so far

No, but seriously, I'm on episode 3, almost at episode 4.

No spoilers, plz.

I kinda expected the series to go downhill with this season but it's good so far.

The People's Joker, after a contentions debut at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, is about to reach its widest audience yet.

Having seen this movie, it is:
* A queer coming-of-age-movie that tells a deeply personal and emotional story
* A love letter to the Batman mythos
* A torchbearer for Tim and Eric type humor

That description alone should tell you if it is worth watching for you.

Figures from across the film and TV world, including Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy and Palme d’Or winners, have signed a pledge saying they will refuse to work with Israeli institutions and companies that are “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.”

In January 2024, a 6-year-old girl trapped inside a bullet-riddled car in Gaza City begged for someone to rescue her. Contact was lost with the first ambulance. Hind Rajab, five family members and two medics were found dead 12 days later.

The impact of the story, and the audio of Hind’s voice from that call, has been vast, inspiring songs, protest movements and now a film from Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania.

“When you hear her voice you feel powerless,” Ben Hania told The Associated Press recently.

Hind’s cousin, Layan, who was in the car, had told family members that Israeli forces were firing on them before she was killed. The Red Crescent said Israeli troops fired on its ambulance. Asked for comment, the military said the incident is “still being reviewed..."

Graham Greene, a trailblazing Canadian First Nations actor who opened doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, died September 1 in a Toronto hospital after a long illness. The Oscar nominee from Dances with Wolves was 73.

“He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed,” Greene’s agent Michael Greene (no relation) said in a statement to Deadline. “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” he added, referencing the actor’s longtime agent, who died in 2013.
