Whew, where have those five years gone?
When federating between Lemmy instances got fully implemented and working at the end of 2020, I wanted to take part in growing Lemmy's popularity. So I bought a VPS from Hetzner and in February 1st 2021 my Lemmy instance saw the light of day. Because there were only few big Lemmy instances at the time, instead of an instance exclusively for Finns, I decided to create Sopuli as a general-purpose instance to attain larger userbase.
This is why this instance's name is "Sopuli" (lemming), not something like "Lemmy Suomi". The name is related to rodents like Lemmy, and the Fediverse's unofficial tradition of naming projects based on animals. For foreigners "Sopuli" also sounds original and perhaps also mystical.
New Lemmy instances started emerging little by little and the culture of Lemmy started forming. The amount of active users was rather low and discussion was largely centered around Lemmy.ml, the instance of Lemmy's developers. 2021 was a good start where things were still trying to take form.
In October 2021 I accidentally deleted Sopuli's own directory from the VPS when trying to upgrade to the newest Lemmy version. Luckily I had backed the database up, but when I tried to get Lemmy running after reinstall, lots of problems started popping up. This Github issue tells about these difficulties I faced. After almost two months I got Sopuli up again, but the backup didn't include pict-rs, so all the images saved until that point were gone. Thanks to Lemmy's developers and admins of other instances, I got Sopuli back up and I was excited to tell about this on Independence Day.
The year 2022 was petty stable, and there were no big challenges at the time. In Spring 2023 Sopuli got its current logo made by William Rudi. The original logo was made with MS Paint in 15 minutes, so the difference was like night and day.
The summer of 2023 was something entirely else instead.
When Reddit told about the plans to make their API paid, that would have meant the developers of third-party clients having to pay millions of dollars. The userbase got angry, and many communities there closed their doors as a protest for several days. As a result, users started running away to alternative platforms, especially Lemmy.
I wasn't at all prepared for a massive rush of new users. When I woke up in the morning and saw 20 new membership applications, I had to collect my jaw from the floor. The Hetzner VPS I used at the time couldn't endure the big amount of users at all, and I had to scale it up several times. I got messages almost daily, telling about either Sopuli being down or performing slowly.
The now biggest Lemmy instances such as Lemmy.world and Sh.itjust.works were founded at the time, and they evened the burden brought by new users. Once the revolt of Reddit users tamed down and things started settling down later the same year, the worst started to be over. Of course Sopuli's performance had problems even after that, and I had an app on my phone that would send a notification every time it was down.
These performance problems were frustrating both for me and the users. Finally in June 2024 I migrated Sopuli from Hetzner's VPS to a more powerful dedicated server. After that the instance has been rather stable, and there haven't been any performance problems. Not only I bought better performance, but also piece of mind. In retrospect I should have migrated to a dedicated server in summer 2023 already, because due to the performance problems many Reddit users interested in Lemmy might have gotten a poor first impression, losing their interest.
I have tinkered a lot with Linux of course and I have my own home server, but before Sopuli I hadn't administrated my own web platform used by other people. I have had to learn many things, some the hard way. Despite all this, "if a person doesn't do any mistakes, he doesn't do anything else."
Because Sopuli was now stable, 2025 was stable as well. Interest towards alternative social media platforms has increased steadily due to what's happening in the world right now, and the rush of new users hasn't brought similar problems as before. Even Nicole hasn't been able to crash Sopuli, even though she struck my and other admins' nerves. In March 2025 I released a Lemmy guide, where I tell about Lemmy and touch on my own experiences as an admin. In August we started using Anubis that takes care of all kinds of scraping AI bots.
This brings us to the current day. Sopuli has established active userbase, and communities have been created for e.g. memes, traveling through land, Ukraine, Steam hardware, concept art of video games, board games and of course Finnish discussion. It feels honorable that Sopuli out of all Lemmy instances has become a de facto place for discussion about Steam hardware and Ukraine. When it comes to Ukraine, I hope that the community continues as a general community related to the country once the war ends.
So, lots of things have happened during five years. The clear direction however is that when centralized social media platforms cripple their functionality in hopes of maximizing profits and lick the boots of wealthy autocrats, the demand for sustainable platforms keeps on growing. These sustainable alternatives don't rely on being commercial and centralized, but on open source and decentralization. Control goes back to the people, and people get a chance to develop Internet culture into a healthier direction as well.
With Sopuli, it has been exciting and rewarding to take part in building better Internet culture in both Finland and internationally. The global situation may be what it is, but when it comes to the Internet, the keys to change are in our hands.
Therefore I want to thank Sopuli's users: you have helped to build this change. You have helped to make Sopuli and Lemmy in general what it is now.
Thanks also to Sopuli's current and former admins and community moderators: you have helped to keep the place clean of trolls, spam and other content breaking the rules.
Thanks also to other admins of Lemmy instances: you have given me valuable help in case of problems, and without you I would have likely have quit years ago.
And thanks of course to Lemmy's developers: you are doing valuable work and the software you are developing helps to make the Internet a better place.

The video is about the change of Internet culture and how the Internet has become a playground for centralized platforms owned by large corporations. At the end, one important piece of advice is given for viewers concerned about the situation: "support your local business." Again, the keys to change are in our hands!
Huh, minne ne viisi vuotta ovatkaan menneet?
Kun vuoden 2020 lopulla Lemmy-instanssien välinen federoituminen saatiin toimimaan, halusin olla mukana Lemmyn suosion kasvattamisessa. Niinpä hommasin Hetzneriltä virtuaalipalvelimen ja 1. päivä helmikuuta 2021 oma Lemmy-instanssini näki päivänvalon. Koska tuolloin isoja Lemmy-instansseja oli vain muutama, laajemman käyttäjäkunnan saavuttamiseksi päätin tehdä Sopulista yleisluontoisen, sen sijaan että olisin perustanut vain suomalaisille tarkoitetun instanssin.
Tämän takia instanssin nimi on "Sopuli" eikä vaikkapa "Lemmy Suomi". Nimi liittyy jyrsijöihin kuten Lemmy, ja fediversumin epäviralliseen perinteeseen nimetä projekteja eläinten mukaan. Ulkomaalaisille "Sopuli" kuulostaa myös omaperäiseltä ja ehkä myös mystiseltä.
Uusia Lemmy-instansseja alettiin vähitellen perustaa ja syntyneen verkoston kulttuuri alkoi muotoutua. Tuolloin aktiiviset käyttäjämäärät olivat melko vähäisiä, ja keskustelu oli paljolti keskittynyttä kehittäjien oman Lemmy.ml -instanssin ympärille. Vuosi 2021 oli hyvä alku, jolloin asiat alkoivat vielä hakea muotoaan.
Lokakuussa 2021 vahingossa poistin huolimattomuuttani Sopulin oman hakemiston virtuaalipalvelimelta kun yritin päivittää uudempaan Lemmy-versioon. Olin onneksi varmuuskopioinut tietokannan, mutta kun yritin saada uudelleenasennuksen jälkeen Lemmyn pyörimään, tuli paljon ongelmia. Tämä Github-raportti kertookin näistä vaikeuksista. Likimain kahden kuukauden jälkeen sain Sopulin takaisin pyörimään, mutta pict-rs ei kuulunut varmuuskopioon, joten kaikki instanssille tallennetut kuvat siihen mennessä olivat kadonneet. Kiitos Lemmyn kehittäjien ja muiden instanssien ylläpitäjien tarjoaman avun, sain Sopulin takaisin ylös ja kerroin asiasta innoissani itsenäisyyspäivänä.
Vuosi 2022 oli muistaakseni aika lailla vakaa, eikä silloin tullut mitään merkittäviä haasteita. Keväällä 2023 Sopuli sai nykyisen logonsa, jonka teki William Rudi. Alkuperäinen logo oli tehty MS Paintilla 15 minuutissa, joten ero oli kuin yöllä ja päivällä.
Kesä 2023 oli sen sijaan aivan muuta.
Kun Reddit kertoi suunnitelmistaan tehdä sovellusrajapinnastaan maksullinen, olisi tämä tarkoittanut miljoonien dollarien maksuja kolmannen osapuolen sovellusten kehittäjille. Käyttäjäkunta suivaantui tästä, ja monet yhteisöt menivät protestina säppiin useaksi päiväksi. Tämän seurauksena käyttäjät alkoivat sankoin joukoin rynnätä vaihtoehtoisille alustoille, etenkin Lemmyyn.
En ollut ollenkaan varautunut massiiviseen käyttäjäryntäykseen. Kun heräsin aamulla ja näin 20 uutta jäsenyyshakemusta, minun piti kerätä leukani lattialta. Silloin käyttämäni Hetznerin virtuaalipalvelin ei kestänyt ollenkaan isoja käyttäjämääriä, ja minun piti useamman kerran skaalata sitä isommaksi. Sain ainakin kerran päivässä viestejä, jossa kerrottiin Sopulin olevan alhaalla tai jossa valiteltiin sivuston hitautta.
Tuolloinhan perustettiin nykyään isoimmat Lemmy-instanssit kuten Lemmy.world ja Sh.itjust.works, jotka tasasivat uusien käyttäjien tuomaa kuormaa. Kun Reddit-käyttäjien kapina laantui ja asiat alkoivat vakiintua myöhemmin samana vuonna, pahin alkoi olla ohi. Toki Sopulin suorituskyvyssä oli vielä ongelmia tämän jälkeenkin, ja minulla oli puhelimessa sovellus, joka lähetti ilmoituksen aina kun instanssi oli alhaalla.
Nämä suorituskyvyn ongelmat olivat turhauttavia sekä minulle että käyttäjille. Lopulta kesäkuussa 2024 siirsin Sopulin Hetznerin virtuaalipalvelimelta tehokkaalle dedikoidulle palvelimelle. Sen jälkeen instanssi on ollut varsin vakaa, eikä mitään suorituskykyongelmia ole tullut. En ainoastaan ostanut parempaa suorituskykyä, vaan myös mielenrauhaa. Näin jälkikäteen ajateltuna minun olisi kannattanut siirtyä dedikoituun palvelimeen jo kesällä 2023, koska suorituskykyongelmien takia moni Lemmysta kiinnostunut Reddit-käyttäjä saattoi saada huonon ensivaikutelman ja menettää mielenkiintonsa.
Olen toki näpertänyt paljon Linuxin kanssa ja minulla on oma kotipalvelin, mutta ennen Sopulia en ollut ylläpitänyt omaa verkkoalustaa, jota myös muut käyttäisivät. Olen siis joutunut oppimaan monia asioita, osa kantapään kautta. Tästä huolimatta "jos ihminen ei tee virheitä, ei hän tee mitään muutakaan."
Koska Sopuli oli nyt vakaalla pohjalla, oli vuosi 2025 myös yhtä lailla vakaa. Mielenkiinto vaihtoehtoisia somealustoja kohtaan on kasvanut tasaisesti maailmantilanteen takia, eikä sen tuoma uusien käyttäjien ryntäys ole tuonut samoja ongelmia kuin aikaisemmin. Nicole ei myöskään onnistunut kaatamaan Sopulia, vaikka se koettelikin minun ja muiden ylläpitäjien hermoja. Kun uusi suomalainen instanssi Lemmini.fi perustettiin, julkaisin maaliskuussa 2025 Lemmy-oppaan jossa kerron Lemmysta ja sivuan omia kokemuksiani ylläpitäjänä. Elokuussa otettiin käyttöön Anubis, joka pitää loitolla erilaiset louhivat tekoälybotit.
Tästä päästäänkin nykyhetkeen. Sopulissa on vakiintunutta aktiivista käyttäjäkuntaa, ja yhteisöjä on perustettu mm. meemeille, maata pitkin matkustamiselle, Ukrainalle, Steam-laitteille, videopelien konseptitaiteelle, lautapeleille ja totta kai suomenkieliselle keskustelulle. Tuntuu kunnioitettavalta, että Lemmy-instanssien joukossa juuri Sopulista on tullut de facto paikka keskustelulle Steam-laitteista ja Ukrainasta. Ukraina-yhteisön osalta toivon, että sodan päätyttyä se jatkaa toimintaansa yleisenä Ukrainaan liittyvänä yhteisönä.
Viidessä vuodessa on siis ehtinyt tapahtua paljon asioita. Selkeä suunta kuitenkin on, että kun keskitetyt somealustat rampauttavat toimintojaan nopeiden voittojen toivossa ja mielistelevät rahakkaita autokraatteja, kysyntä kestäville vaihtoehdoille kasvaa kasvamistaan. Nämä kestävät vaihtoehdot eivät nojaa kaupallisuuteen ja keskittämiseen, vaan avoimeen lähdekoodiin ja hajauttamiseen. Hallinta palaa takaisin ihmisille, ja samoin ihmiset saavat mahdollisuuden kehittää Internet-kulttuuria terveempään suuntaan.
Sopulin myötä on ollut jännittävää ja palkitsevaa olla mukana rakentamassa parempaa Internet-kulttuuria sekä Suomessa että kansainvälisesti. Maailmantilanne on toki mitä on, mutta Internetin suhteen muutoksen avaimet ovat meidän käsissämme.
