I currently use FluffyChat, but since it the notifications for my second account are not working I wanted to try out other clients as well.

This Week in Matrix includes an announcement that I find interesting:

The Homeserver Decentralization Community Group aims to promote decentralization of the Matrix network by fostering a smoother onboarding experience (to homeservers and clients) on homeservers other than matrix.org, and might propose additional measures in the ecosystem as a whole. It is not an official Matrix Foundation Working Group, but aims to become one.

See the link for more details.

From April 2026 element will only allow verificated devices to communicate.

https://element.io/blog/verifying-your-devices-is-becoming-mandatory-2/

Problem now is, due to device changes in the past (those devices dont exist anymore) i can not "verificate" my current device.

There is a warning that says:

  1. verify with other device (i cant)
  2. Reset everything
  3. skip

i clicked that skip button for a while now....but i fear thats gona become impossible in a few days.

so i tryed the "Reset everthing" button and then it said "Error: Cannot find secrets in storage"....

I have no idea what to do now D:

I pitched element as messenger to a bunch of friends and they also running into the same problem....

So I manage a discord server related to autism of about 800 people and due to Discord's recent issues, we have been looking at opening an alternate space on matrix that is bridged to our discord. I did try self hosting but I am admittedly not technically inclined and couldn't get it working, so I have the space on a public home server. We have gotten things setup and ready, but there is one concern, which is moderation. I did manage to get a draupnir instance, but I have not found it to be an adequate automod. I am concerned about how moderation could work as we have a large number of rooms. I wanted to know if anyone who moderates a large matrix community can provide some insight on what to do for this.

Continuwuity 0.5.6

You've got mail! Well, actually, you've got a homeserver update to install. And if you don't have an update to install because you aren't already using continuwuity, then you've still got a homeserver update to install, because you should be using continuwuity anyway.

What's changed since 0.5.5? idk, I just deliver the mail. You should read the changelog for the v0.5.6 release to see what's new. I guess I also help write the server, so I can tell you some of the things that changed, but it's important that you know this wasn't in the job description when I signed up.

  • 🔐 Support for "MSC3814 Dehydrated Devices" has been added, meaning you can now receive encrypted messages without being logged in (supporting client is not included).
  • 🕷️ URL previews have had their reliability boosted with new configurable user agents, and a dedicated purge command to remove old ones.
  • 🌪️ Massive improvements to performance for inbound federation (from other servers), which has also increased reliability.
  • 🕴️ Added partial support for appservice device masquerading, which should decrease issues encountered with mautrix bridges.

There were also some (low severity) security fixes in this release:

  • Fixed a data amplification vulnerability (CWE-409) that could be exploited when some compression algorithms were enabled.
  • Removed the theoretical ability for escaped admin commands (\!admin in rooms other than the admin room) to be executed over federation. This is a followup enhancement to further improve the resilliance to attacks similar to CVE-2026-24471 and CVE-2025-68667.

Another important change in this release: federated presence is now disabled by default. Typing indicators and read receipts are still enabled by default, although their documentation has been updated to reflect the cost of using them. Local presence is still enabled by default, so users on the same homeserver can still see each others' online/unavailable/offline status, but it will no longer federate to other servers unless explicitly enabled. Also, there is a bug in 0.5.5 and below with our policy server implementation - if you do not update to 0.5.6, and join a room with both the stable event type, and the unstable event type, you will encounter "duplicate state" errors when trying to process others' events. This cannot be resolved without upgrading.

Questions? Concerns? Write me via carrier pigeon. Or join #continuwuity:continuwuity.org, that works too.

Also, we once again have even more rooms. If you look in our space: #space:continuwuity.org, you can explore some of the more topical-but-not-continuwuity rooms, such as our now popular #techtopic:continuwuity.org room, which is basically our offtopic room, but for the more technical discussions not everyone there will care about. As always, everyone is welcome in our general rooms, you don't have to be running continuwuity or even care about the project to join in!

Anyway. Woof.

Are there ressources that help you find the right Matrix server software in 2026?

There's Conduit, continuwuity, Tuwunel and Synapse, but what are the differences between them? Which one should I choose when all I want is a homeserver that allows E2EE, federation (optional), voice calls, screen sharing, reliable mobile notifications and that ideally isn't a ressource hog (aka what people say about Synapse)?

Hi! I'm looking for tips on starting a server. It would be for a very small private group. I will be hosting on a VPS.
