I've been geocaching for a couple of decades now, although very low-key. One reason has been that geocaching.com became such a pile of turd some time ago.

What other sites exist beside that one?

Personally I would be most interested in ones that have a reasonable amount of caches in Finland and Baltics, but maybe generating a somewhat comprehensible list of geocaching sites would be of use in general, so maybe let's try to collect one here?

Letzthin machte ich einen technisch verspielten #Webcamcache: Das Foto für das Log kann über einen Logeintrag ausgelöst werden und das Bild wird auch automatisch in das Log hochgeladen. Eine faszinierende Cache-Sache 😃.

Nach der Bürozeit ging auf die Jagd nach dem nächsten #OpenCache – und fand ihn schneller, als ich "Donnerstagbier" sagen konnte. Anschliessend hoppelte ich zu den beiden flinken Hasen in #Dietikon 🐰💨.

My wife and I found our 700th cache, on our 7th anniversary, while on vacation in Japan, introducing a friend with us to geocaching and she seems hooked now, and it was a FTF. I don’t think we could have planned it better

UnifiedMap roadmap & "old" maps deprecation notice

c:geo has an all-new map implementation called "UnifiedMap" since some time, which will ultimately replace the old implementations of Google Maps and Mapsforge (OpenStreetMap). This is a deprecation notice to inform you about the further roadmap.

UnifiedMap got published about a year ago. It still supports Google Maps and OpenStreetMap (online + offline), but in a completely reworked technical way, and with a lot of exciting new features that the "old" maps do not support, some of which are

• Map rotation for OpenStreetMap based maps (online + offline)
• Cluster popup for Google Maps
• Hide map sources you don't need
• Elevation chart for routes and tracks
• Switch between lists directly from map
• "Driving mode" for OpenStreetMap based maps

UnfiedMap has proven to be stable since quite some time, thus we will remove the old map implementations to reduce the efforts for maintaining c:geo.

Roadmap:

• "Old" maps are in deprecation mode now - we won't fix bugs for it anymore.
• UnifiedMap will be made default for all users in fall of 2025.
• "Old" map implementations will be removed in spring 2026.

Until then, you can switch between the different implementations in settings => map sources.

Im new to geocaching and use my phone to track location. But I see that Geocacher usually use a GPS Device. What’s a good product for beginners? If you would start the hobby now, what would you buy?

My last find was in 2016 and I'm looking to get back to it. What equipment and supplies are you taking with you on your adventures? Are you using a standalone GPS or just your phone?

Bushwhacked for half an hour to get to this one in the middle of the forest.

This was in a recent puzzle cache I found. All these wooden blocks in a large container, which spelled out the title phrase when arranged correctly. The final container was, indeed, buried in the same spot!

Just a regular old find while walking around the neighborhood, but it made me happy so I wanted to share

Opensource geodata of celltowers, wifis and bluetooth beacons is crucial.

It allows apps like UnifiedNLP to give the OS the location data it needs, without relying on GPS Sattelites.

GPS can be tampered with, and A-GPS is not privacy friendly at all.

UnifiedNLP is only found included in microG, which is pretty insecure.

But GrapheneOS devs are working on a regular user app that serves network location data, using Apple, Apple (proxied) or a local BeaconDB database!

BeaconDB is a new service to replace MozillaLocationServices which has shut down unfortunately.

Apps like TowerCollector dont yet support it, but NeoStumbler does, and also has more advanced features.

Collect network info in your region, and in the future you (and everyone else using it) dont need GPS anymore!
