Some news were already about this "classic" gameplay option, more details are shared in this video.

One of the great mysteries of Civilization V has finally been solved. Aqueducts doubles your food yield until you reach 40% of what is needed to grow until the next citizen; that doubled food is then banked towards the next citizen and added when you grow. Thanks to Affenbreit and GeneralBARDAK for their insight.

Firaxis Games have heard your cries, and so Civilization VII is getting an update at some point to let you play as one civ continuously through the Ages.

So, you know, like you would actually expect from a Civilization game instead of the incredibly divisive ages system that transforms your civ into something else as you progress. It was always an odd move for Civilization VII, as they tried to mix up the gameplay with competition from the likes of Humankind and other 4x games.

In an announcement the devs talked about some major changes including "dramatic changes to the Legacy Paths and Victories" that will "open up the game and provide many new paths your empire can follow while achieving greatness and competing for victory". The bigger one has "been one of the most requested features from players - we're internally playtesting ways to play as one civ continuously through the Ages, allowing you to choose a civilization from any Age and guide them throughout your journey through history".
