Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

My computer has accumulated some cruft that's making it hard to manage, and resetting the PC seems like the most straightforward way to deal with it. I already have all my important files saved elsewhere. I also wanted to see if I could kill two birds with one stone and rid myself of the dependence on an MS account. I've seen there's some terminal stuff you can do when installing Windows fresh that bypasses the mandatory account creation, but does that still work when resetting? Especially when resetting from the cloud?

And because someone is going to say "Just use Linux", believe me, I'd love to, but the user experience sucks for literally anyone who isn't a software developer and the accessibility has actually gotten worse over the 15 years I've tried to use it.

I don't understand why there's no secondary option if Strait of Hormuz goes down. Obviously there are alternative routes out there but why big gas companies even governments did not see this coming. Are they okay losing billions? Or do they actually have a plan that ordinary people don't know about?

Or maybe do i need to file a FOIA or something? If so how do I do it? Back when I was in college we had Lexus Nexus to get such information. Do they have Lexus Nexus outside of a University for lowly citizens?

Background

This question is mostly about GraphenOS. I am trying to compartmentalize my profiles so all of the Google shit is in 1 profile.

I understand that there are alternative apps for the daily stuff, but that is going to take a while for people around me to change.

Profiles in GOS

The idea of profiles is very nice, until you realize you cant do much on a non Google profile, at least for me. Initially I have:

Owner - no Google

Daily - needs Google so sign in

Banks - well needs Google to download the bank apps.

So just that setup I have to sign into Google 2 times. It kinda defeats the purpose of compartmentalize when Daily and Banks have the exact same account.

GrapheneOS push apps feature

So i test around and find out that in Owner, you could "push" an app to other profle...I think the Youtuber SideOfBurritos does this too.

I also created a Test profile with nothing in it then pushed 2 apps downloaded from Google Play in Owner: Chess and Boost for Lemy. Those apps work flawlessly in Test profile..

Questions

What is going on here? Is Chess in Owner and Chess in Test the same? Same apk?

Why am i able to run Chess in Test when it has no Google stuff whatsoever? Aka no Gplay service or Gplay store installed. Test is completely fresh.

How does update work? If I update Chess in Owner, will it update in Test?

When will these "pushed apps" fail? Havent tried it yet but I would assume they will fail when you need to connect to Google service, like Whatsapp google backup?

I always enjoyed explaining to patients what we do, why, what they should do for aftercare and what happens afterwards. What I don't like is the grind that's nursing and how immature, lazy and uneducated, proud antivaxers, many nurses I work with are.

The subjects don't seem that difficult, it would be simply studying more comprehensibly anatomy, biology, chemistry, medicines, OR, legal...

I find it realistic to pass this bachelor but I'm on the older side already. My fears are:

  • a reduced job pool: everyone needs nurses, but the need for PAs is not as big. I'd have less choice.

  • age discrimination: true that most of us will have to work till 70 or 72 but I'm still afraid of being rejected for being old.

OTOH: better work life balance and clearly more money in a field that's not completely unknown to me and I don't hate.

so i know labels are overrated, some may say, and all that, but my sister thinks it's interesting to find out. it may change as she's a young teen, but she's never had a crush, as she says. in fact, as well, she's never had a sexual desire or libido, which my dad said is "abnormal as most teens are wanting to have sex", even though it's clearly ok to not want to and everyone is different.

i said she's probably aroace but i'm not too sure (i myself am a lesbian romantically on the ace spectrum). today, she said if a guy were to flirt with her or be/do something generally what people who like men would consider attractive, she wouldn't find it attractive, though she does find guy singers and actors hot. however, she saw a girl wearing attractive clothing recently and found her really pretty and attractive, though she wouldn't date her.

she says she would be happy to date someone without doing romantic things and isn't interested in kissing, but anything beyond a platonic life partner situation is a no for her. one of my partners (i'm poly) is a platonic partner (masc nb), and they felt the same way, no kissing but a platonic life partner situation is ok, and they're aroace, so i told her it was very similar to them. again, she has never felt romantic or sexual attraction towards someone, and while she does appreciate their beauty, she doesn't wanna date them or anything like that and is only ok with a platonic life partner situation without doing romantic things like kissing.

is aroace a good term? we're trying to help her figure out her sexuality and you can't say for sure, but there could be a good starting point.

I am a tradesman with a lot of technical skills with some specialized skills in short supply (at least in the US) with a little less than a decade of experience. My partner is a skilled social worker with more than a decade of experience.

We cannot afford a golden visa in any country.

We are at least 3rd generation Americans, and do not have the right to claim citizenship in any other country without going through the immigration and naturalization process there.

Neither of us is very good at picking up a new language (lord how I've tried)

Where could we realistically look to go?

So I get ads are terrible, obviously. I run ad-blockers all the time. But people also get angry at paywalls. So that leaves me wondering, if not through ads or subscriptions, how is a news publisher supposed to sustain itself?

For example, take the price of RE9: Requiem (Deluxe) in comparison to major currencies and notice that it costs LESS than from the Western world: (Why is that the case?)

Country Local Currency in USD in GBP in EUR
Japan ¥9,990 $62.85 £46.80 53,75€
South Korea ₩91,800 $61.90 £46.30 53,15€
China ¥398 $58.30 £43.30 49,70€
India ₹4799 $51.70 £38.50 44,20€
Kazakhstan 29,100₸ $60.95 £45.30 52,15€
Philippines ₱3490 $58.40 £43.50 49,95€
Indonesia Rp 1039000 $60.80 £45.30 52,00€
Vietnam 1690000₫ $64.40 £48.00 55,10€

Now take the exact same game in "Western" money, it costs even MORE :

US UK EU
$79.99 £69.99 79,99€

Like, why is it so expensive? I would say the US one costs more as sales tax isn't accounted for (until checkout) on their store front while VAT is included on both UK & EU store fronts via steam.

Hi, with the summer getting closer i want to buy a pair of sunglasses but i have no idea where to start, there's too many models (and i basically only know the classic rayban in photo and the aviators) so i'd like some suggestions.

My face shape is oval, maybe rectangular but im not 100% sure.

I'm oriented in buying second hand so i'll be saving money (ideally i would like to spend below 100€) and also i don't want to be bothered if they get scratched or damaged (since im going to the beach often, playing like beach volley and shit).

Thank you for every suggestion, have a nice day :)

Don't get me wrong tattoos are great I have seen very neat ones. But I have also seen people who can barely afford anything or just down on their luck get a tattoo? Where are the priorities at?

I could not find many Lemmy posts about USB or video cable recommendations, please let me know if there are!

I will be moving soon, and I want get some good, quality cables that are certified by their respective thing (e.g. USB-IF for USB cables, VESA for DP cables I think) and compliant with relevant standards, since the drawer of unlabelled mystery cables is not a solution that I want to continue with. I would rather that the cables be compliant with relevant standards and preferably have clear labeling/indication of spec (but most unfortunately don't have that).

What are the best:

  • USB-C 240W charging cables?
  • USB-C 40Gbps data transfer cables? (USB4 or TB3/4)
  • DisplayPort cables?
  • HDMI cables?

On Reddit, I see hundreds of posts gushing over Anker as the holy grail of USB cables, but then there are conflicting reports of people unhappy with Anker (bad customer service, they broke the cable, sub-brand Eufy leaking security cam footage, etc.) and preferring other brands instead. For DisplayPort cables, lots of people seem to like Club3D and Cable Matters, the latter is also recommended for HDMI cables. Many random Amazon brands are also thrown around, but those look like they're from bots.

It's hard to tell whether any one if made by a person or a not. Anker bots are definitely out there, I found a thread talking about how good quality the, as far as I can tell, nonexistent Anker magsafe 3 (as in the one used in macbooks, not the wireless charging puck!) to USB-C cables are. I'm also sure that other companies use bots, like Ugreen, but Anker's are the most obvious.

For the cables that I have bought myself, Anker's "Powerline Flow" series of cables are really nice, they don't tangle and are made of super soft silicone. Pretty expensive for a cable that only does charging though. I have also previously bought a 2m Baseus charging cable (which does have a 240W label, which is nice!), it seem durable enough, just a little stiff, and it works fine for my laptop at 65W.
