Live Music Archive preserves legacy of Chicago music taper Aadam Jacobs

Aadam Jacobs is a notable figure in the Chicago music scene, known for his extensive audio recordings of live shows during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000’s. For two-plus decades, he attended a dozen or more gigs a month, setting up his microphones and deck and audio taping the performances for his private collection. Often referred to as "Chicago's Taping Guy," Jacobs has spent decades capturing thousands of live performances, particularly in Chicago's indie rock and underground music venues. Jacobs' dedication to preserving these live performances has culminated in a vast archive of audio tapes. There are roughly 10,000 tapes with approximately 3 sets per tape so the archive likely is 30,000 separate performances.

His recordings include early performances by bands that went on to achieve significant fame, such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and The Flaming Lips. He became a regular at iconic venues like Lounge Ax, The Metro, the Double Door, and the Smart Bar, where he was both a fan and an informal archivist of the live music scene. His meticulous recording and cataloging efforts have created a valuable archive of Chicago's music history, preserving countless performances by both established and emerging artists for future generations to enjoy. Jacobs' passion for music began in his youth, and he quickly became immersed in the local music scene. He started taping shows in the early 1980s, using cassette tapes and later transitioning to DATs and digital formats.

Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/MapPorn.

🤷 Some people calling bullshit in the comments. I don't know what to believe, but i sure as sticazzi can't afford 100m^2 in stockholm. In fact, living alone, i would barely afford half of it.

Considering legacy social media often allow a display-name differing from the username, i'm not sure this will have a very different effect on online communities then what we can already observe in contemporary impersonation scams. However, vigilance has always been necessary online, and is probably going to be all the more important in a context of DID/SSI/VCs

The way i see it, paltform leveraging DID/SSI/VC will have the burden of responsibility to provide meaningful ways for users to verify the authenticity of their peers. "Responsibility" being avoided at all cost in most commercial online contexts, i'm expecting it to be a painful process to begin with. It will boil down to how well we do as communities, and as a specie, at transferring knowledge among us.

(spoiler: only works on a very small number of devices. Still cool)

You'd have to ask my tinfoil cats about the details. I'm still reluctant to attribute these "people" with the hormones necessary for cooperation, coordination, or anything starting with "co-" really...

..But the tinfoil cats have a point

My tinfoil cats are mewoing about a coordinated effort accros the IT sector to make one year with insane profit and the added side effect of lowering the wages accros the sector.

Ok, let's say I create the 2nd firehose in existance, could you elaborate on how I would get everyone to read and write to it? Would I have to merge the bluesky firehose to mine, or have I effectively split the network until someone creates a third firehose that merges both? What if bluesky doesn't care about my firehose, how will their users ever see my posts?

Please rest assured I ask out of genuine curiosity, I don't expect you to have all the answers. But I might as well try my luck as you seem knowledgeable.

Thanks!

Thanks for your effort! I genuinely appreciate it!

Maybe I misunderstand, but what I gather from your writing, is that bluesky might become decentralized in the future, if a decent amount of separate groups manage to raise 30 million dollars each.

Thanks! In the tutorial, they mention listening to the firehose. I'm not able to wrap my head around this (singular) firehose. But I remember seeing this initiative trying to crowdsource 30 million dollars to run one for 3 years Can you elaborate on that and help me understand better?

I love this. Just came here to get it out of my system, that it drives me a little bit crazy how the webpage for this breaks on mobile.
