What exactly does Monado do? It was also referenced in regards to the Index but I didn't end up needing it (and there weren't any native packages so I didn't offer)

Nice! VR was one of the increasingly few things I kept Windows around for, but when am update screwed my drivers I gave it try on Linux again. Initially it didn't look promising but a couple of tweaks and going with SteamVR Beta - as even with the Index it didn't like regular SteamVR - I had things working just as good as in Windows for any of the games I've tried.

I'll have to try things out with wireless and the Quest 2 that's been sitting on my shelf, and maybe see what the compatibility is looking like for the newer devices (or wait and see if the hinted "Frame" is the next Gen)

No. Though if it were somebody who was sexually assaulted after repeatedly praising and promoting rapists I'd probably similarly acknowledge the irony.

This guy reaped what he showed, and despite the initial attempts but right-wing issues to make it a battle cry to blame and attack the left even more ... it looks like it came from somebody even nuttier than him in camp "go go fascism". Had it been somebody else in his circle of crazy who took the hit, I've little doubt that a Kirk would have been part of the "we need even more guns to fight the left" crew before they even identified the attacker.

While I am not going to recommend bullets to heads (or necks) as a good idea for solving these issues, I'm certainly not going to cry about this particular neck intersecting said bit of ammunition nor fail to note the irony in that given his platform.

I'm still thinking a lot of those "people" are just "bots"

[–] phx@lemmy.ca 10 points 7 months ago

I'm wondering how many are even "people", rather than Russian bots etc

Actually, he's such a gun afficiando that he regularly eats bullets for breakfast, but this time accidentally ate a live round which was later set off by stomach acid and propelled in an upward direction at a slight angle.

Was he though? Nobody has been arrested and charged yet so for all we know the shooter could be a jilted lover etc. might not even be a "he" for that matter

Well, they used to be. Digital locks and built-to-fail (instead of just cheap) components plus decreased component manufacturing is making that less of a thing.

Which is fine for their store. But one of the things that used to make Android a more free ecosystem was that you could load apps from 3rd-party sites or stores, including stuff like F-Droid. Some of these apps do things that Google in particular won't like - i.e. circumventing ads/analytics - so having them control who gets signing keys is not good

A crazy person no. A cult of crazy people in a compound... yeah rushing can be more dangerous than holding back

Yeah, and after having dealt with the "I missed a few updates and then the last one put my files out of sync with my schema" Docker issues, I'm very much happy to use the snap. Been on that a couple years and it's been quite solid, even if I did have to install snapd on my Debian base for it

The obvious exception to this is cases of addiction or poor life decisions.

Like if you collect/play Pokemon or whatever as a hobby and are excited to get a rare card, that's great and I'm happy for you.

If you're underwater on your mortgage and your basement is full of beanie-babies - that you're sure will make you rich in the future - but you just won a bid of $1000 for one rare beanie on eBay... yeah I'm not gonna be happy for you I'm gonna recommend talking to a professional

I've been looking at some Linux based phones and one thing that caught my eye was a Pi based build.

This makes a lot of sense to me in many ways as the smaller Pi's carry a lot of power and expandability, however it was based on an older 3b platform and consequently very bulky.

Currently, my searches online have led me mainly to boards that support CM4 but also have ethernet ports etc (adding build) or use USB/pinouts with no CM (Compute Module)connector.

Anyone know if there's a small board that can support cellular connectivity with a native CM connector?

Also, any way around the lack of SDCard support for Pi's that boot from eMMC (would like eMMC for the OS and SDCard for larger stuff, pictures etc)?

I'll add: the board doesn't have to be credit-card sized. Something along the lines of an average smartphone so I can fit a decent LCD would be fine, just no Ethernet etc making it too thick

Has anyone seen anything in terms of locks that could be used for smaller doors etc. For example, a drawer/cabinet style lock or something that might work for bifold closet doors etc. Also setups that could be used to automatically slide out a drawer.

I'd like to create some "secret drawers" as well as be able to lock out stuff like the "candy/snack drawer" as certain members of my household have poor impulse control and like snitch candy then not easy their dinner

(Yes I've tried hiding it, putting it up high etc, but they're sneaky and automation is more fun)

While I quite like the ability to broadcast TTS, media, and other such things to Google Nest or Amazon Alexa devices, I'm trying to rein in my HASS setup so that it doesn't send data to our require cloud services.

Does anyone know of or recommend a wireless speaker service that can accept broadcast/streamed/sent audio without needing an internet connection. Bonus if it has a microphone that can integrate with something like a local Genie instance for accepting voice commands (without cloud processing)

I'm not sure if we're allowed to ask questions on this sub. It seems mostly news articles but I figured I'd give it a go.

So Bruce Power in Ontario is planning to build the world's biggest nuclear plant in the world (by expanding on an existing plant).

BC is more well known for hydroelectric, but that particular source hasn't really been greatly expanded on in decades and site-C is pretty controversial.

This got be thinking:

How do we in BC feel about nuclear power? Would you support one near where you live? Why or why not, and what other power options would you prefer?

Kevin Mitnick - the world's first famous "hacker" - has died at age 59 after succumbing to pancreatic cancer.
