For anyone curious, the original image is called "The Popes and the Last Steam Passenger Train" and was taken by O. Winston Link in 1957. It features a N&W class J pulling the last steam-powered passenger train in Max Meadows, VA in the background

I think the format was previously used to represent change in opinion by level of experience (hence the curve). It likely got confused with time passing since typically experience increases with time. Ex:
