Person A steckt alles in einen ETF und person B geht damit in die Spielhalle oder kauft einen Sportwagen. Selbst in einer idealen Welt ohne Ausbeutung wird es nach 50 Jahren wieder eine ungleiche Verteilung geben.

The compression was already explained - I would add that if you're not deep into scene groups, popular repackers are in general a safe choice, i.e. no malware included. Of course it's never 100% safe, but in my opinion safer than picking from a list of torrents what could be the scene release.
I never had issues with fitgirl and Dodi, maybe other users can drop some more names that have proven to be reliable over a long time.
There's a high probability that it will work if you simply run the launcher through steam. Honestly it's impressive what you can throw at it and it just works (TM).
Only thing to look out for is the installation path when you run installers that way, with all the virtual filesystems and stuff. Haven't encountered a single game that didn't run since the switch, be it pirated, gog or steam
