thank you folks. Your input gives me a decent starting point. I'll start digging based on info/experiences shared, maybe I can find someone locally selling old GPU with enough ram for cheap

well, I intend on scavenging for parts as I can't really afford today's prices. And since I don't really know what should I grab as minimum specs I don't even know what to look for. I could try to look for old(er) gaming rigs people sell or maybe there are some business workstations that may be sold in bulk. Either way, knowing what's the minimum viable set of specs for running qwen or claude locally would be helpful

I've got some circa 2010 cards laying about with a 32Gb server that already has 8Gb carved out for TrueNAS, so essentially I could squeeze 16-24Gb out of it, but it's an older i5 Intel CPU

I want to host some LLM's locally and use more advanced models. Since new hardware is out of the question, I think I should be able to pull something off buying some yesteryear equipment on ebay etc. Did anybody attempt such a project? Does it scale horizontally? (I.e. can I connext two boxes to overcome single box slowness?)

not "if" but "when" but that is of no concern to CxO's and "market analysts" 😉

This is irrelevant as CEO's and shareholders keep screaming "moar AI!". Engineers know limits of the tool but are forced to ignore those. So yes,LLM is comming for your job but not because it can do it,but because it is perceived to be cheaper.

it actually will take your job... it will crash industries and economies a touch later, when all the knowledge and expertise is lost and we're left with a choice of rolling back a century or keep living within enshitified society. And not because AI is useless, but because suits and wallstreet are casing exponential profits from the snake oil AI outfits are selling.

there was labour movement that clawed some freedoms and dignity from savage capitalism. Those gains are eroding fast now. Unchecked, capitalism has no inventive for sharing spoils with labour.

is that the same guy claiming that there should be no moderation on Facebook for "true freedom" and who cried his eyes out telling stories of horrible Democracts making him take out deranged individuals off platform? Well...

both are lies and in both cases women got mistreated and used. True that we should do better but don't fool yourself about historic facts.

Fedora 40 running on Dell laptop with KDE spin has done it twice on separate occasions: after rebooting for updates it just hangs after applying them. Is this something known? I've looked on google but could find only similar queries in other places with no answers or "just hard reset it" answers. I've been running Fedora for over a decade now and haven't seen such behaviour until recent releases. Some config drift? something else?

Pi Cap has everything I need for my project in terms of function, however their howto page has 2022 update stating that Bullseye does not work with it and one needs to use Buster. I would appreciate any pointers.

Does anyone else experience "avalanche" of app crashes on each thunderbolt dock unplug with Fedora 41 KDE edition?

I have file an issue and linked some of the crash reports already ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2329570 ) but I am curious whether it's something specific to my setup or a general problem?

I just found out that sometime in the last month or so while doing regular updates Wine got bumped to 8.12... (likely from 8.0) and my games have gone haywire: Neverwinter Nights and Diablo2 would kind of start but then halt. Switching to desktop and back unblocks games for the next few seconds and then things repeat.

I've downgraded wine to 7.12 and things are working back.

Question: should I have done some migration step for 8.12 to work properly or is it even a known issue?

I am using PlayOnLinux for Diablo2 with System Wine and Vanilla System wine for NWN.
