I never loved the idea of hosting everything on one server, even in a federated system. I had asked on matrix before if anyone would want to but there was nobody willing to pick up hosting the instance. I don't want all of this to depend on me and people to lose touch because I am unavailable. For now we will keep the instance up and running, at least till we find a suitable replacement software that is more decentralized.

Nostr works via multiple different relays, which makes it way more decentralized than a federated system. This explains it pretty well: https://newsletter.squishy.computer/p/natures-many-attempts-to-evolve-a

Last week this instance decided out of nowhere that it deserves a break and vanished.

After multiple attempts of troubleshooting, I was about to put up a static html to announce the move away from "the broken ass lemmy", when i figured out the real problem (nginx config was changed for some reason and no longer correct).

That being said, I still would like to move away from lemmy. At the time of setup, it was the closest to a reddit replacement we had available but by now nostr has matured a lot and it would be in everyones best interest to start building a community on there instead of a federated platform like lemmy on which you lose your entire online presence when the instance goes down.

If you have any suggestions on what specific nostr frontend we should host here on monero.town, please feel free to share them!

Personally id like to deploy an instance of https://monstr.land/ but sadly it is currently not FOSS.

Never heard of clockswap before, beware of phishing.

Re-uploading should fix it, i really didn't have the time to look into this too much :/

Be advised, openmonero has been "hacked" before and users lost funds held in the sites escrow. I highly recommend to use the decentralized Retoswap over this.

Yeah, this was not very useful so it's shut down.

It's not too many as it's just in the overall instance sidebar and pretty hidden but it has probably already paid for a domain renewal :)

Hey there, just wanted to thank all the people that have been active on here over the last 2 years :)

We migrated servers earlier this week and still have to fix a bunch of configuration-stuff to get back all our old images & add .onion support but overall it went decently well & town won't dissappear any time soon.

That's about it, see you at Monerokon!

I might need help with the tor config after the upcoming server migration. I should be able to handle exporting and importing the database & this time I'll be using ansible for the install instead of a manual docker config.

The server is getting migrated soon, i did not really know what i was doing when i initially set this up.

It's not really but the paper suggested some improvements that would make the transactions waaaay harder to link to a trade. Definitely a net-positive for privacy.

No, the transaction tracing relies on the transparent bitcoin chain. It does not work for the off-chain payment methods and especially not for something super private like cash by mail.

For the last couple of days we were offline due to a DDoS attack originating from Tor.

We are now behind cloudflare (💀) but at least we are online.

We might switch to a different CDN in the future.

This was a massive upgrade from 0.19.3 to 0.19.4 and finally to 0.19.5:

0.19.4 Patchnotes

0.19.5 Patchnotes

The change with most user impact is that everyone can now see how many upvotes & downvotes a comment or post (hover above the vote count) has. Previously only the sum of all votes was shown via the default lemmy UI.

Monero turns 10 today! 🥳

Hello guys.

In about 50 days the 1 year hosting runs out for the current server. Fitting, since it has only a 100 GB disk that can't easily be expanded and we currently take up about 40 GB of that.

There will be an announcement post once everything has been prepared for the migration and I'll attempt to restore the entire instance on the new server. Ideally the instance should come back up after minimal downtime and all the content remains exactly like it was before.

Consider joining the matrix channel to stay up to date even while the site is potentially down :)

For some reason posts on our instance have recently gotten more downvotes from outside instances than usual and many posts look like this:

I personally don't like the idea of disabling downvotes but if the feature is mostly going to be used by outside users because crypto is "le bad" we might as well turn it off.

Here are the patchnotes :D

To be honest, no idea what this entails. I was bullied into updating the instance and the official patchnotes are just all the github changes instead of a proper write-up 😂
