What sites did you use? I'm using family search and am having issues finding the records I need.

I am in the research process right now. I'm having trouble finding my great - great grandfather's birth certificate. I'm getting worried because I contacted someone and they said not everyone had a birth certificate in the 1800s. I can find him on census records that list him and both his parents and where they are from. But Im not sure if census records count for this application. Were you able to find actual birth certificates/records for each family member?

How's the Linux support? I'm having an issue of finding a platform that works properly with Linux, especially screen sharing. For some reason, audio does not work in screen sharing on Linux with discord or Root.

So much for critical thinking skills...

I am getting fed up with trying to use my 3 leg hi hat stand with my double bass. I don't play in a band or professionally, just for fun, so I don't need anything high end. I've been looking at the Tama HH315D Speed Cobra 310, but thought I'd see what other ppl are using. From the reviews I've read on different pedals, the main issue is stability, as they tend to wobble more. The DWs seem to be the best but they are more than I want to spend.

Building a PC right now is not the best idea, RAM and storage prices have increased a lot (in the US) anyway. And I agree with the comment that pretty built aren't the best option either. My friends who have got pre Built's have both had issues with them. Alternatively, steam just announced their new steam machine which will be based on their steam OS and I believe will have a normal linux desktop environment like the steam deck does. As for distro, I use and recommend linux mint. It's designed very similar to windows and you don't need to access the terminal as often as some other distros. I have an Nvidia 4070 and it works perfectly fine with mint.

I just checked and it had every permission accepted.

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a new car (24 mazda cx5) that supports android auto. I've never had this feature before and so I'm new to it, but so far it's been working really well. I am having an issue with voice commands, specifically for calling and texting. Voice commands work for changing music or playing something else from my playlist, but when I say "call mom" for example, it pops up what I said on screen but then nothing happens. I have tried multiple times with different ppl and I have tried sending texts. It will register what I am saying but then it just goes back to Google maps. I know calling works through the car tho, because I have recieved calls and if I use the touch screen to access my contacts, I can make call that way. It will also notify me when I recieve a text message. And I know I have service when I have tried to make calls. I tried searching online but didn't have much luck. Thanks!

Grayjay is still working for me

That's weird. I don't use any of those other programs but Firefox dark mode has been broken for a while for me.

Hi everyone, I got a full suspension MTB this summer and am trying to plan storage for the winter. Right now I am storing it in the house but I won't be able to in the winter. If I can keep it covered and away from moisture will that be good enough? I'm worried about the cold temps.

CVT lifespan (lemmy.world)
submitted 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) by WeebLife@lemmy.world to c/mechanicadvice@lemmy.world

Hi everyone,

I have a 2012 Nissan versa which uses a CVT. I am close to hitting 100k miles and just had my transmission serviced. I'm not having any problems with the transmission, but just wanted to do routine maintenance on my car. When I was at the shop, the guy kept telling me how unreliable CVTs are and I'm lucky I got 100k miles out of it. He also made it sound like it could totally fail at any point in the near future. So I'm just curious how long do CVTs last? He said they typically fail around 70k miles. If they truly don't last much longer than 100k miles then maybe I should look into getting a new car while mine is still working. I tried looking it up online but I don't trust the AI content.

Thanks!

My neighborhood still has an ice cream truck. I'm curious how many other cities still have ice cream trucks. They seem outdated at this point.

EDIT: thanks for all the responses! Its surprising to me that ice cream trucks are still going, but that's awesome!

Right now guitar center is having a sale on 2 kits ive been interested in. The Roland Vad 307 and the TD - 27kv2. My personal preference is the VAD kit, but I've read reviews that the 27kv2 has better gear. I don't play in a band or professionally, drumming is just my hobby so I don't need top of the line gear. I was hoping I could get some feedback from owners of these kits to see which one would be better. Both of these kits are pricey for me so I want something that will last a long time and I won't grow out of it in a few years. My experience level is only intermediate. One thing I do want is a good bass pad for double bass. The TD looks smaller than the vad Thanks!

EDIT: I ended up buying the TD 27 bundled with the KD 180 kick drum from edrumcenter. This kit is amazing! It feels so much like playing a real acoustic kit. I still can't get over the actual hi hat controls and the snare drum that's so sensitive and responsive. The module is also really awesome, so much customization and the stock sounds are actually pretty good. One thing that's kind of lame is it doesn't have WiFi and the only means to update the firmware is to use an SDcard. Overall, I recommend this kit to anyone who's looking to upgrade.

I have been wanting to play this game since it was announced. However, I prefer single player games. I know this game is designed for 3 players, but I read that they were going to add 2 player and maybe single player support. have they made it any better for us loners? I don't really want to play with randoms either.

EDIT: thanks the input everyone! Looks like I'll be picking up the game at some point since they are balancing the game for different players.

Hi everyone,

I have an old galaxy note 8 that I would like to flash and get a Linux based OS on it. I recently put lineage OS on my galaxy tab s6 and it's working great, but it looks like lineage doesn't support the note 8. I heard about cyanogenMod but it seems like thats discontinued. I just have some games I want to play from the Google play store, so my needs are basic, so just having a simple OS for games that the devs are keeping up to date would be great. Thanks!

Mountain bike shoes (lemmy.world)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by WeebLife@lemmy.world to c/mtb@lemmy.world

Hi everyone, I am a beginner with MTB. I just recently got a polygon T6 and have been loving it. I'm doing research about all the new aspects with MTB and quickly finding out how pricey this hobby can be. My boss recommended that I get specific shoes made for MTB. I did a quick search to find that they are really expensive. My question is: are these necessary? Or can I find a good pair of skate shoes for a cheaper price? I don't do hardcore riding yet and only go a few hours a week.

EDIT: thanks everyone for the responses. I will keep shoes on my to buy list, but I will wait a little until I find a good deal.
