Is anyone familiar with the specifics of how Circle to Search (linked) works? I was looking for a FOSS alternative to the google circle to search tool and came across it. It seems to describe its implementation in a clear way on the GitHub page, but I have not validated that it does actually operate using that architecture, or that it keeps to its promises about not caching info that is pulled from its third party OCR tools.

On android it asks for "advanced permissions" which I presume are needed to take screenshots and share these with the third party OCR service. Since I havent validated how it works though, I wanted to check if anyone else has before I provide it those permissions.

I am looking for a UI (web browser or app) to use on my Android phone that lets me access instagram, but which doesn't give me such easy access to reels and other video content. I am imagining something similar to Newpipe that uses a different UI to provide access to the same content, but which isn't such an attention trap.

Is there a reason that instagram and facebook have such curated experiences while youtube is able to get presented so differently by third party apps?

Thanks for the suggestions! I have already used MusicBrainz Picard to identify most of the media in my library. It is just the somewhat subjective mood and style tags that didnt get populated from Picard.

I may give Beets a go and see how far I get. If it isn't what I'm after, it sounds like kde kid3 will probably get the job done.

I have a Jellyfin environment that I often access remotely via Tailscale and a companion app (Jellyfin for Android, Findroid, Symphonium, etc). Lately I have been wanting to sort my Jellyfin-hosted music library using styles, moods, genres, etc to make some of my smaller albums more visible in my library.

I don't want to sit at my PC for hours sorting through tags for each album/artist/track though. I would prefer if I could tag an album/track/etc with a genre, mood, or style tag while I am browsing my library from a companion app via Tailscale.

Does anyone have a solution that would enable this? Perhaps someone has solved this in an even better way than I have envisioned here.

More generally, how do you all tag your music libraries? Any tips?

Image of a bike fork steerer tube

The question of whether my tube tapers or not has been hard for me to answer. My steerer looks to interface with the bearing at a wider diameter than the steerer is at the top. In saying that though, the tube doesn't taper smoothly...

Would you call this a "tapered" or "straight" tube? This is effectively a taper I would think.

I am looking for some advice on how to go about finding replacement front fork for my gravel bike. I bought my bike second hand and it was already a few years old at the time I believe which might explain why it is hard to come by a replacement part. The bike in question is a Fuji sportif le one.0.

I am looking for a fork which:

  • has a steerer length of ~10 3/4 inches
  • has a steerer diam of 1 1/8 inches
  • fits a tapered bearing
  • will fit a 9x100 QR axle
  • has a post mount disc brake interface
  • will fit my 28x700c wheels and tires

I have been put onto this ENVE fork which looks a bit too good to be true.

If anyone has tips for looking for new forks, things that I have missed, or other suggestions I would be all ears. Every time I think I may have found a solution I end up learning something new about why it would not work for me.

I am trying to put together a D&D character sheet in obsidian using the dataview plugin. It is going well but I have run into the fact some stats which I want to display (e.g. AC) are a function of Ability Modifiers (e.g. Con of +3) which themselves are a function of the character's Ability Scores (e.g. Con of 16).

As far as I can see, dataview lets you define variables (properties) in the front matter of a page and then reference them on different pages, but I cant seem to find a way to define one of these variable as a function of other variables.

I have tried this kind of thing with no success:

---

con: 16

conmod: floor((number(this.con) - 10)/2)

ac: 10 + this.conmod

---

`=ac`

This video was super helpful but only got me so far... Any advice? Maybe this is just a limitation of dataview.

I believe that jellyfin has been transcoding using jellyfin-ffmpeg. I do have logs labelled "FFmpeg.Transcode-..." which seem to look fine. I have just turned on hardware acceleration though. Is that what you meant by "hardware transcoding"?

Ill check to see if the buffering is improved and will let you know how it goes! Thanks for the advice!

I currently have a jellyfin setup running on my pc which I access when away from home by tailscaling into my home network. This works great for my partner and I while we are away from home.

I have given my siblings access to my jellyfin setup as well, and I've added them to the tailscale network too. They live in a different country though and have had some latency issues (media buffering constantly) making it kinda suck to use.

I would love to be able to improve this performance but I dont really know where to start. Would this be a bandwidth issue somewhere between my pc, tailscale, my router, their router, and their device? Would this be caused by some setting in my jellyfin setup or in the jellyfin client on their device? I would really appreciate any advice on where I should start to troubleshoot to improve this performance.

Did you have a source for this? This sounds very interesting!

How are the roles of tipping and personal lines of credit similar and different in the modern day compared to their roles in the south in the US during the time of slavery?

I recently went on a tour of a plantation in the south that educated attendees about the history of slavery which was pretty eye opening. A couple of the interesting comments made were that:

  • Some skilled slaves (e.g. blacksmiths) would sometimes be "loaned" out to other plantations where they could earn tips.
  • On one particular plantation, after slavery was abolished and up to ~1960 there was an on-site store where workers would buy goods using credit from future wages. This was a means by which these "free" workers were prevented from leaving as, although they were paid, they were constantly taking on debt from their living expenses.

Both of these phenomena of tipping and individuals purchasing goods using credit are pretty foreign concepts to me as someone who grew up outside of the US. While these conditions were probably improvements to the baseline conditions of slavery, they also weren't as kind as they couldve been, and seem to still be systems that were intended to keep these people subjugated. These are also systems that continue to be used to take advantage of some of the most disadvantaged people in the US today.
