Devices should be supported longer than 14 years. There is nothing about a 1st gen kindle that makes it incompatible with modern technology. For Amazon, an immortal entity, to act like 14 years is already gracious is nonsense. A 20 year lifespan (including repairs) should be the bare minimum standard.

Humans live 80-100 years. I shouldnt have to buy 6 or more e-readers (or 25+ smartphones) over my lifespan just to have access to one

Cutting them off from the online store is one thing, but the fact that they are bricked if you deregister or factory reset them is awful

I have a kindle keyboard that hasn't been online in over a decade, but still gets regular use. i upload drm-free ebooks i own using Calibre. Now it will be impossible for me to give it away since it is forever zombie locked to my Amazon account

He was my representative until i recently moved. I've met him twice at coffee shops in Fremont just by chance.

He always seemed friendly and normal, if maybe a bit performative. The guy he originally replaced was a very old-guard corporatist Democrat, so i initially had high hopes for Swallwell.

I'm pretty shocked by this. Now the man is going to double down and further embarrass these women and his family by continuing to run and staying in office.

It will be easy to find a better rep for the district than Swallwell. That part of the Bay Area has more progressives and socialists than liberals, and the libertarian Republicans still outnumber the MAGAs

i do the same but our sessions are short so it ends up as 2-3 session long self contained episodes (playing Beam Saber)

i prefer to run games that some would call "narrative heavy" like Blades in the Dark but i am a stickler for the rules.

A well made game will have rules that each make the game more fun, so the temptation to ignore them should be rare.

It outlines the process of removing a sitting president from office if they are unfit to serve and unwilling to resign.

It also details the procedure in the event that the president dies, is temporarily unable to serve, or fully resigns, or if the VP dies or resigns.

Gavin running for president might flip California red lol. He is hated here across the political spectrum.

Thank you lol i will look into this next chance i get. I only remember looking at man systemd

my one critique is pretty subjective, but i find it difficult to find simple clear documentation online about how certain syntax works and how certain tasks are accomplished.

Recently i was trying to set up a cron-job type automation to run a script every minute. I know how to do that in cron (and if i didn't, there are tons of good resources online) but i had a hell of a time figuring it out for systemd. I also wanted to have the script run at boot or user login and i couldn't figure that one out (but i know how to do it with cron)

i'm not a power user so it's entirely likely the information was hidden in plain sight and i completely missed it

I remember booting Gentoo in about 7 seconds to the GUI desktop around 2013. A lot more than systemd has changed in the Linux ecosystem since then. It feels like everything has gotten just a little slower.

[–] Peasley@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That's kind of the best case scenario though: there isn't even a significant benefit

And by hoops i only mean the kind of thing you just described (despite not being a systemd thing specifically) : small differences with the mainstream distros that might cause friction for someone inexperienced. It's not the end of the world. I was being a bit hyperbolic admittedly

I think there are plenty of pragmatic reasons an experienced sysadmin or Linux power user might prefer OpenRC or something sysVinit compatible over systemd, but i think those reasons make a lot less sense to someone who is, respectfully, obviously a beginner (revealed by their use of the phrase "gaming compatibility")

20 seconds isn't that fast...

I'm using Fedora on a sata SSD and mine boots in about 15 seconds. My laptop running Ubuntu on a sata SSD is about 17. Both running normal systemd

edit: i just timed ubuntu at 12 seconds. i do not have luks encryption though

If you are asking about "gaming compatibility" you should not switch to a non-systemd distro. You will end up going through extra hoops for zero benefit.

Just got all my consoles hooked up. I've been playing Castlevania:SOTN on Sega Saturn (English translation) and loving it. What are you playing?

This is a list of reputable brands, seed dealers, and nurseries for acquiring native plants, both online and offline. If you'd like to add one to the list, just post it below, and I'd appreciate a little blurb about your experience with them or why you find them reputable.

The list is currently pretty sparse, but with everybody's help, we can make a great list!

Linda Vista Native Plants (Saratoga)

Larry has a wider selection than most Native Nurseries I've been to. He seems keenly interested in manzanitas, ceanothus, dudleya, and bulbing plants like calochortus. His stock is a mixture of Bay Area, Central Coast, Channel Island, and San Diego species with a smaller selection of Sierra Nevada, North Coast, and SoCal species. The nursery is pickup-only by appointment. My impression is that Larry would rather lose a sale than sell an unhealthy plant, so be prepared that part of your order might not be there if he doesnt like the look of it. I highly reccomend this nursery if you are in the Bay Area

Linda Vista Native Nursery

California Flora Nursery (Just outside Santa Rosa)

One of the great institutional nurseries of California native gardening. Their overall stock is unmatched, but only a small fraction is available for purchase at any given time. This is the only nursery that commonly carries clones of the Vine Hill Manzanita other than the common hybrid cultivars (such as Howard McMinn, Sentinel, Harmony). The non-hybrid species is usually (but not always) low-growing, with smaller darker leaves and more delicate flowers, absolutely stunning IMO. The pure species selections will be named stuff like "VHP - A11 'low growing'" or "VHP - B3 'tall one'" since they are from stock also used for ex-situ conservation plantings

This nursery is also responsible for the introduction of many popular cultivars, especially Ceanothus. Some of my favorites are Ceanothus "Better than Ray Hartman" and Arctostaphylos "Reina de la arena". Their selection is wide, but especially covers the North Bay Area, Northern Coast, and Inner Coast Ranges. Good variety of oaks, pines, cypresses, grasses, and even annuals. In my opinion, it's worth the trip from anywhere in California.

Dodders are parasitic plants. The specimen seen here is using Pickleweed as a host plant.
