Yeah yeah ill document everything one day, when all is "done"...

Jokes aside I just use outline for everything but I wanted something more lightweight as a kind of backup that works with plain text, other ones I didn't quite like but this seems just right

I only host for my family and me otherwise use public servers, for that my server never consumed much resources at all and I never ran into these key issues people mention. I've been hosting it for 6 months. Idk despite it all Matrix just checks all the correct boxes is it not worth using even with the issues you had?

Matrix solution always worked good for me

Why does nobody like matrix? I get setup maybe used to be hard but I personally used ansible playbook and its really noob friendly and simple

all good its confusing with all the different terms and pros and cons

[–] Arda@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

yes in most games i just want freesync to work but my most played games are cs2 and overwatch i r un both easily at 400+ fps on my 240hz monitor and thus i want no kind of vrr involved and jsut the direct frame output to my monitor as quickly as possible. At this high fps tearing isnt really visible anyway its just about the latency

[–] Arda@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

ill look into it and i have no problem messing with configs as long as its worth it

I want minimum latency as I play competitive games and am very sensitive to it. Hyprland has hdr support which is a must for me and on paper should support vrr and tearing aswell. With VRR I had occasional issues but something like tearing was impossible to get working for some reason, kde plasma should do both well but I have gotten used to tiling window managers and don't really want to give that up.

So id like to know about your setup if you have gotten something like tearing to work or other recommendations.

EDIT: I went back to KDE Plasma and was able to confirm that direct scanout and tearing work, i used window rues to force it for specific games, i also use https://codeberg.org/anametologin/Krohnkite which allows tiling on plasma. Its not as beautiful as hyprland but meets me demands

Overwatch is a generally well running game both on win and linux but it suffers from bad shader compilation.
I was wondering if there are any fixes for this specific issue, overwatch has an experimental dx12 mode which is supposed to run better once shaders are compiled for the first time but in my experience theres massive added latency in dx12, im not sure what causes it or if there is a work around for that. Right now i use a custom game (Code: 929PJ) and follow the instructions of the creator which are to delete shader cache and let the custom game run afterwards.
If i dont do this the game stutters heavily every boot and having to run this custom game for every map everytime i want to play with a smooth experience is extremely annoying.
Are there any fixes you know or is this up to the devs?

I have everything I host and expose behind authelia (which requires 2fa) as middleware or as the only login method with oicd, thus far it seems to work well, of course I get a bunch of malicious traffic and spam but this gets to authelia and stops there, I don't even see multiple tried login tries ever so I felt pretty safe. However it does seem that everyone uses either fail2ban or crowdsec in addition so I have been wondering if it would really add any security in my setup or if I'm missing something. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt but crowdsec always seemed a little too complex for me and I don't want something I don't fully understand in my security layer and I never saw a nice way to setup fail2ban so never bothered. Afaik there's no webui or such things and you have to manually make working regex for everything. I'd like to know if I'm missing something or if anyone has tipps to give

Do you have any minigames in mind that you used to like which you cant play anywhere anymore? Suggest them here, from these suggestion we will hold a vote and recreate the minigame, open source it and host it!

As an example we already remade a basic version of the old Cores and BowBash. To discuss or for more information you can chat in the Matrix space or come try the modes on goodoldmc.com

Things like necessary age verifications are annoying to the average user and can potentially be motivating enough to move the masses to something like matrix. I don't see that happening without the current big centralized platforms enshitifying anyway so these news make me more happy than anything, finally I can see my normie friends get annoyed enough by the standard to do a little bit of research about alternatives. Am I wrong in thinking this, would any big change ever happen without massive platforms getting worse ?

You may have seen my earlier post saying that i was trying to bring back some old gamemodes that became lost in time, Cores is now playable again after many years as ReCored!
Modrinth waiting for aproval https://modrinth.com/mod/recored

I also have it running on my server if you want to try it IP: goodoldmc.com

If you can contribute in anyway or want to discuss and/or add other old gamemodes to be remade, i invite you all to the matrix space

Edit: its working now https://github.com/Arda501/ReCored

Maybe you remember a gamemode from the 1.8 days called Cores or under a different name. The one I grew up with was played in a German server called gommehd.net, the mode has been gone for years and they even declined to sell me the code and I could never find a different server with it.

Cores is similar to bedwars, but always only 2 Teams of various sizes, each team has 2 Cores (beacons) as long they exist you have infinite respawns and once they're mined the game is over. Mining a core take a long time and thus defending it is fairly easy and you have to build and attack with multiple people to successful mine one. This results often in either matches that are over in an instant or that go on for so long that all islands become fully build and overtime the battlefield starts looking like world war 1 trenches. There is some loot on the map, in middle and outer islands and at certain times other loot and bosses spawn, this makes it kind of similar to a moba, you can farm and make your team stronger which will often be needed if both sides are good enough.

I'll admid that the whole code will be mostly vibecoded as I can't code much but since its a fairly simple mode I expect it to work well, I already got the basics working and will open source or and host it on my own server aswell once it's finished. If anyone would like to help make maps for it let me know, you can see an example in the picture, its islands based.

Are there any other old gamemodes that have become lost in times you guys remember? After this I'm going to start recreating a nieche mode that was called bow bash, and I plan to make my server an archive of these old gamemodes of there's enough interest
