According to the wiki:

It wasn't taken with that meaning in mind (which didn't exist at the time), but sure it's a curious coincidence.

seems liek Galileo was eventually right in his dismissal of geocentrism, however his actual arguments for it were kind of weak and didn't really prove his point.
