Hello everyone,

I just wanted to give a quick update and see if anyone has any feedback. Please either reply to this thread or feel free to DM me directly.

First of all - eviltoast.org isn't huge by any means, but it has grown more than I expected, especially with no advertising/etc that it even exists. Thank you all who have joined!

Updates

  • Lemmy will be upgraded to 0.19.10 soon, probably Friday, April 4th. No issues are expected, and there will be a post once that happens.
  • eviltoast.org is going to be migrating to new hardware in the near future. I don't have a date for this yet, but it feels like the right time to move it to its own dedicated resources. Tentatively by the end of April.

Ideas

A couple ideas have been floating around for a while that I'd appreciate feedback on.

  • Alternative Lemmy UIs. Now that the landscape has settled down a bit, does anyone have preferences/recommendations on which alternative lemmy UIs are worth providing? Alexandrite, Voyager, Mlymym, etc.
  • Other fediverse software. eviltoast currently only consists of Lemmy on eviltoast.org. Would anyone be interested in also having other fediverse (or even non-fediverse) projects setup? Mastodon and Matrix are the primary ones being considered. I'm not opposed to other options either.
  • Local content. There isn't much local content here, which is totally fine! Should we do anything to try and encourage changing that?

I found eviltoast via a directory of instances after I searched for science and tech. I'm new to lemmy, but lemmy itself is new enough that there's a lot of folks who are also new. It's been pretty darn cool so far. Hate to say it, but sorta like reddit used to be.

Local content? Expect me to dump more in the selfhosting and cats communities. I've got a hell of a homelab going, and I need to brag. BTW if you don't think its a security risk, and ya have a sec, tell us about your new gear!

But do we need more local content? From what I see around lemmy, there's a lot of duplicated effort and many of those dupe communities look fairly abandoned, so I've not even considered starting a new community here. I think the local content question is best answered by asking what do we want or need to talk about? For me, that's cats and data systems.

Thanks! I've settled on the new hardware, but it'll be a few weeks before it gets set up and I can actually migrate to it.

I should write about how everything is hosted now, maybe I will once I get the new stuff set up. Other than hardware, I'm planning on migrating away from hashicorp nomad to kubernetes along with a more normal stack.

You're right about duplicated efforts. One thing I'd like to see improved on lemmy is something like federated/decentralized communities. There are multiple selfhosted communities for example, it'd be nice if they could all be combined into one place so that you don't have to look for all of them when subscribing.
