What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

"It was better when one of the worst people who ever lived was in charge."

The best thing Steve ever did for the world is try to fix his extremely treatable cancer with a fruit diet.

[–] dreamkeeper@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Rich entitled prick massively lucked out with an easily treatable form of pancreatic cancer, but killed himself anyway.

He was a fucking psycho who only cared about product quality, so if you were a customer, it kinda ruled. If you had any other interaction with him it was probably hell.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

That's not all he cared about.

He also cared about manipulating entire markets to make everything more expensive to undercut any economies of scale and turn it all into profit at the customer's expense. He was a goddamn pioneer at that.

product quality and apple do not exist in one sentence

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

??

[–] FundMECFS@piefed.zip 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apple is a terrible company but I’m willing to bet anon misunderstood and the apple store people told him they were currently missing the parts to fix it.

[–] TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

This make so much more sense.

Now I understand. Lol.

Everyone loves apple. Until they get told their 2-year device that needs servicing is now 'legacy', and no longer supported/ serviceable.

Seriously. I never had a laptop hardware failure before my mbp. Which cost 1.5x as much.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 6 points 1 week ago

I’ve never had this happen in 20+ years with Apple. I’ve had some crazy old devices go bad too; hell they’ve even replaced other random parts that were bad for no extra charge.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I just had a battery replacement done by Apple for my 5 year old Apple Watch…

My Macbook M1 Air lasted 3.5 years before the logic board died. Although to be fair that's longer than my HP laptops.

The Apple representative though told me that support for the laptop would end in a year or two which is sad because it's still a very capable laptop otherwise. Asahi Linux is a neat project, won't help with firmware updates though.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Same. I liked the chassis hardware. But so fragile. Pre butterfly, if anyone's interested.

Apple has been a shitty company for a good 15 years now.

Ever since they force the app store into their Desktop OS. There are certain signs a company gives when they're become overly adversarial with customers.

Right now Android are giving those signs.

[–] rabidhamster@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When did they force an app store on the desktop os?

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Some time between Snow Leopard and that free version of the OS they offered. I think it was Mavericks (10.10).

You'll have to look into yourself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App_Store_(Apple)

But yeah technically you could still run a Classic II with OS6.9 and never have to upgrade if that's your point.

Getting apps outside the App Store is trivial. Even unsigned apps.

There are better things to be mad at Apple about.

You're on Enshitification trying to argue stuff is "good actually."

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It hasn’t been good since they bought SoundJamMP and got rid of the Eclipse vizualizer.

[–] rabidhamster@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago

One of my machines is a mac.
They set up an app store many years ago, but it was never forced or required. Just install stuff the way you always did, and forget that the app store application exists.

Or are you mixing it up with the developer signing thing? That shit was annoying, and needed a terminal command to disable.

ah i see where your problem is

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

They were shit forever but it started to show during the Samsung vs Apple years. Jobs said he would go nuclear to not make Android a thing. Any company that want to control every aspect of your digital life is bad. It's like a boyfriend telling his girlfriend, "you're not allowed to have friends that are guys anymore. I'm the only man you talk to". Not a perfect analogy, but it conveys the idea.

Average consumer mindset.

Bonus: see how much money I saved? This shit is worth £200 but I only paid £175!!!

It's definitely exploitative, probably fraudulent, customer service, but that's not really planned obsolescence.
