It's funny, by me pickup drivers are usually the most considerate ones to cyclists. Cars with florida plates are usually the worst. I think the reason is that most of the pickups are DOT registered because people use them for work.
I'm pretty sure I'm almost killed by a pickup weekly; definitely haven't gone over a month without it for quite a while
Wow, crazy. I commute 21 miles (one way) to work in the rural north east on my e-bike. I get buzzed like once a week maybe.

Maybe California does it differently, but given the number of Hitler Particles in that state, I kinda doubt it

They should lose their car and license, and be made to repair all the damage they did. Maybe some community service, too.
My guess is those pop back up when knocked over. Hard to see in the video if they are standing back up after he hits them but i think they do. I agree he should loose his license and be charged with reckless driving.
You can see them pop up in some parts of the video. Regardless though, there's no way they aren't damaged by this. There's only so much wear something can take.

23rd Street, Santa Monica. August 9, 2026, a driver in a green truck runs over bollards in the protected bike lane. On August 19, Councilmember Dan Hall reports that the Santa Monica Police Department “has identified the vehicle and owner. They have had the vehicle towed for expired registration and are following up with the owner on the vandalism of public property.” @electdanhal Santa Monica has built 119 of the 187 miles of bikeway in its Bike Action Plan. Roughly five of those miles are protected. The half-mile on 23rd Street is protected by plastic barriers called “armadillos” while other areas, such as 17th Street are protected by concrete curbs.
I was getting unregistered jalopy vibes from the condition of the truck (dirty, preexisting body damage). Often also means uninsured, and an owner who doesn't have anything to pay for the damage they cause. The good news is that this driver may not ever get his truck out of impound (in addition to towing + storage fees they'll need to pay to get registration current, they probably wouldn't have let it lapse in the first place if they could afford to do that), so he may be off the road for a while. The bad news is that he'll probably never make the city whole for the damage caused here, though maybe they'll recoup something by auctioning the truck.

That's why where I live (europe) those bad boys are full steel planted on the ground and not some wobbly noodles.
Sadly not everywhere yet. From cycling in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland a good bit this summer I see too many places where there is no bollard at all, just a line drawn on the ground that many ignore. Switzerland in particular was not fun to cycle in
I think they're this way in some places to allow emergency services to use them as a dedicated lane (cyclists should move to sidewalks and stop when hearing sirens)
You just gave me a boner.. uh I want those soo bad too! But the only reason why I think it’s like that here in US cities bc potential need for emergency vehicles cases.
Better protected bike lanes = more cycling trips = fewer car trips = fewer cars in the way of emergency vehicles = no need for emergency vehicles to shift into the bike lane mid-block
We also have emergency vehicle and we do just fine, it's all propaganda

Those bollards need to be solid.
I think they need to be flexible for fire trucks and ambulances. A bike lane can turn into an E lane if designed properly.

and this is why I couldnt give a single fucking shit about any law that says bikes cant be on sidewalks/must be on roads or whatever.
because every fucking car is a hostile, imminent threat to a person on a bike.
And even the sidewalk isnt that safe, I've personally been on a sidewalk that had 4 feet of grass between me and the road and STILL have had assholes swerve through the verge to try and scare me/knock me down/make me crash/whatever their sociopathic intent.
edit: and yes, it was by an asshole in a truck. Its almost always an asshole in a truck.

he should be finded for every single of those public infrastructure things he hit for their full replacement value outside of whatever the standard ticket and fine is.
Not good enough:
- Loss of drivers license permanently
- Vehicle impounded and cubed
- Fined the price to change those from useless plastic floppy bits to the concrete and steel reinforced rails needed to keep people safe from cars.
