I did a watch party for it yesterday, only really having the corresponding anime to go off of and whatever I happened to read about the movie on Wikipedia, IMDb, and the Maison Ikkoku fandom wiki. In absence of any content warnings on Unconsenting Media, Does The Dog Die, or IMDb, the only content warning I could provide for the movie was for alcohol use, and I was just left to assume that the movie was otherwise just a loose adaptation of the manga but in live action form, i.e. something that could be a bit raunchy at points but would still be a cozy and fun time nonetheless.
But as the post title says, I found out while watching it that the movie has a number of jokes or plotlines involving suicide or SA (as in characters saying "I'll r##e you," and this is supposed to be funny somehow? this happens on three separate occasions), which I had zero warning for. It seems like I could've found out about the SA jokes if I'd read, like, one specific Letterboxd review, and the suicide parts if I'd read one specific Wordpress review, but at that point the question is how I would've even found those things if I didn't already know to look for them.
So, it's the inherent risk of doing watch parties for things you haven't seen before: most of the time it goes fine, sometimes it doesn't. Thankfully, the people who joined for the watch party weren't very bothered by the things I'd failed to provide content warnings for โ they maybe know to expect the unexpected โ but I at least hope that I can spread some more awareness so that any other Maison Ikkoku fans here don't go into the live action movie with the completely wrong expectations.
Going forward, I'll try to check reviews for content warnings as well, before showing movies I haven't personally vetted.
