No one at the table feels especially cruel. No one feels especially responsible either. The line looks neat enough. On paper, it offends no one. It is drawn less out of conviction than fatigue: a desire to finish, to conclude, to leave matters behind in a form that will not require further explanation.

Maps have always looked more confident than the world they describe.
