Before that it was Monty Python.

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 64 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We had to have a rule at the D&D table. NO PYTHON REFERENCES! One 'Im not quite dead.' or a 'Get on with it!' quip and we'd lose an entire session to Holy Grail jokes.

My third place needs this as a rule for Mel Brooks. Drop a spaceballs or men in tights line in that place and the entire shop stops and waits for people to finish the scene.

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's illegal in 6 countries

[–] Sumocat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

That doesn’t make sense.

Lanolin? Like sheep's wool?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a Trident! 🔱 🔱

[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago

Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.

Anchorman came out in 2004, internet memes have existed way before that

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yeah, they existed, but they weren't mainstream and were mostly just simple image macros. In 2004, if you talked about memes in public, it meant you browsed 4 Chan or Something Awful, which made you a loser to most people.

Cut OOP some slack. This was posted befkre chronology was invented

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Related: Anybody else annoyed how you can't just tell jokes anymore? These days every time you try to tell a joke you heard before everyone just seems to yell about how you took the joke from somewhere or someone. It's like they expect every joke told to be 100% Original Content Donut Steel.

[–] X@piefed.world 10 points 1 month ago

I’m very important. I have many leather-bound books, and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Replace that with Montey Python and you'd be correct. There were memes around when Anchorman came out.

Sokath, his eyes open!

[–] SalamiDommie@lemmus.org 5 points 1 month ago

Family Guy is another one you can toss in the mix. Futurama, Simpsons, SeaLab 2021, Space Ghost.

Lots "I know the thing" memes.

Although I despise that I have to sit through my generation shoehorning The Office and Ron Swanson into EVERY conversation they can...

[–] Dr_Fetus_Jackson@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Big Trouble in Little China and The Last Dragon got a lot of air time for us too. Throw in The Blues Brothers 'we're on a mission from God' as an honorable mention.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

It's all in the reflexes.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

I wouldn’t have even been mad, that’s impressive

[–] Snaffy@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

I don't believe you

[–] UnrepententProcrastinator@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I'm more of a Spaceballs asshole myself.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Or if you’re really old and nerdy, Monty Python.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Pretty much any quotable movie, really. Monty Python, Airplane, Star Wars...

It was a more civilized age. Before the dark times. Before the social media.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Shirley you must be joking.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

I am joking, and don't call me, surely.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

Go fuck yourself, San Diego.

[–] MrShankles@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

You know I don't speak Spanish; in English please!

[–] Jackhammer_Joe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I'm Roy Burgundy?

[–] Holyginz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

When I was younger it was Jeff Dunham lol

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Isn't that precisely what a meme is?

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago

According to its technical definition, yes, a meme is an idea that transmits from person to person. According to its colloquial definition, no, when most people use the term "meme", they're referring to a screenshot. In the 2000s, though, it mostly referred specifically to image macros.

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

It was The Chapelle Show for our cohort.

[–] BeUnique@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

I love lamp!

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Buddy, you just described what a meme is.
