Same purpose as a safety vest, to make them visible.

Because if you don't see them you will be unhappy, trust me. Ouch.

I thought "who put a tiny reflective vest on that caterpillar", before reading the text.

Got stung by one of these as a kid, sucked more than any other string I took in Florida att.

I got stung by one of these or perhaps an oak slug caterpillar around 2 years ago. There was immediate pain, which got worse and worse with pain coming in waves. It felt like the pain was coming from dozens of little needle points in my hand. Before long I had to go inside to sit down because it was getting hard to focus on anything other than the intense stinging feeling.

The only thing that might compare was when I got bitten by a wheel bug when I was a kid.

[–] Dymonika@beehaw.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wow, that sounds absolutely horrible. Was there any permanent damage?

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, there's no permanent physical damage that I'm aware of.

The caterpillar sting was intensely painful for an hour or two, and then afterwards for a couple of days I'd have random relapses of less severe stinging at the site.

The wheel bug bite was so long ago that my memory of it is a bit faded. I was bitten on the foot when I put my shoe on. The pain from that was like getting snapped in the foot by a searing hot bear trap, kind of all at once, and then it simmered down. However, I couldn't comfortably wear a shoe for a day or two afterwards and I had to limp around because it was painful to walk.

Geez! I'm glad either didn't last too long...
